AR-180B. Are they truly garbage or do they have their merits?

I agree with everything Travisbickle said and then some.
I own two, one first hand and another used, and they are both going strong.

Gret designs in their own right.
Otherwise so many other rifles would not have used them as a basis for their operation.
The SA80, G36 and Type 89 to name a few.

Armalite dropped it when the Obamination of AR15s started up.
There was a lot more money to be made in ARs.

Reliable, simple easy to strip and clean, light accurate, it is all that.
Just don't use it as a crowbar or as a step to climb over a barb wire fence and you should be ok.

It's pretty amazing what people think a military rifle of more recent design is capable of. Yes, I have personally used my C1 along with the Section 2IC to "vault" the rest of the section into a window about 8' off the ground...and no I wouldn't try that with anything designed after 1960. They don't make them like they use to.

What would be the legality of making an aluminum lower? Would I be able to just machine one or am I looking at submitting it and going through the bs maze of red tape that would be years of waiting for approval from the queens cowboys. Has anyone gone this route before ( making an aluminum lower)?

You can build any firearm you can legally possess. All I was asked to do was send pictures and I never heard anything more.

Did you miss the picture above?

I`m surprised this still gets questioned ,lovers and haters ,actual owners and what people have heard ,and like anything in between.......opinions from those who base their know and lack of know from the GOD known as GOOGLE (or here on CGN ,you know ,polymer lowers ,stamped lowers.....and pretty much Glock and most pistols)

I have 2(TWO) AR 180Bs ,one used and one brand new.I`m not sure where the F%$# people say these rifles are worth $800 bucks ,when I bought them from Wolverine on March 14 2007 for $ 1039 plus taxes and shipping.OK....they added a collapsible stock and adapter.Where the hell do you guys get 800 bucks from ? Plus taxes and shipping ? I suppose that makes it $ 400 bucks ,less HST....so lets say....oh I don't know......FREE !!!!

WTF....get off the pipe man.The only idiots that break their guns and 180s ,are those....idiots ! My first 180 has over 800 rounds through it (not even a whore as semis go)and still runs great ,shoots pretty good ,and I can shoot it any where I want ,and I have not broken the PIN.

Point is, idiots will break guns ,idiots should not own guns ,idiots that own gun, should learn how to break them down, and AR180Bs never sold for under $800 bucks CDN (no tax ,no shipping)

Don`t like AR180s....go buy a Tavor and bugger off.

...NOTE I own ARs..CORE , DPMS etc.

OH well .

FU%$...I hate idiots and stupid people!

You should see it with an aluminum lower.

Its still too bad those never went into production. Very nice though! And yes, I am insanely jealous if you were wondering... :p

This. Over and over again.

Armedsask you got some skills. And the tools to put that skill to use. Some of us just have cash haha. In varying amounts.

No I don't. I've been out of the machining game for some time. I still dabble but I don't have the equipment. It's looking like that may change soon but I've been saying that forever. Something always screws up my plans.

Laugh2 Well we know how you feel! I agree with your sentiment, dummies, rabid fanboys, and some strange form of scapegoating fill the web with the electronic version of liquid feces. We need to figure out a way to identify these people young so we can neglect to teach them to communicate through the written language. At least then they can only infect others within earshot.

Armedsask, very nice!

I have a 180B that I bought new in 2002 and have roughly 4K rounds down the pipe. Fantastic rifle! I strip it properly, clean it, etc and never a problem. She is not a range queen either, tons of gophers in the fields, rabbits in the bush, and 1 Yote.
I have done a few mods, but do put it back to stock when I want to.
This 180B if on my 'Will Not Sell' list.
I would not hesitate to buy another, if I ever felt the need.

I like your ar handguard where did you get it ( I love to get one for mine )

I don't even own an AR180B (yet) and I would buy that lower in a heartbeat just to have one for when I get the rest of the gun. It's a cool piece of kit on its own. Can't have too many stripped lower especially when it is NR.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with how it turned it. It has some screw ups, and some dimensional problems that means it doesn't actually work, but it looks nice and was a good proof of concept. I've started on a few other prototypes but ran out of spare time and then left the machining field.

I've since picked up a manual lathe for personal use, and I'm hoping to have finally have spot to park a CNC mill now that we put up a building in town with 3 phase power.

It is an aluminum AR15, rifle length, split, drop in style that I got off Ebay for $80 a few years ago. It is the perfect length to fit lengthwise between the front sight and upper receiver, I just had to make caps for both ends from aluminum with the right holes.

I owned one...
'Bought new for $800.
Broke down after the first 20 rounds. Multiple upper receiver weld failures all at once.
I bought an Aimpoint that worked for 5 minutes and crapped out. Does that mean all Aimpoints are junk? Basing a definitve assessment of anything based on a single example is how a 10 year old rationalizes.

Oh, and BTW, did you pay $600 or $800? Inquiring minds want to know.

Midwest used to make a 4 rail handguard specifically for the 180B. Don't know if they still do, however.
