AR 1X4 optic choices

Has anyone here had experiences with the Millett DMS 1-4x24 scope, especially in action shooting? It's a $300 scope ($200 in the US lol), and I've heard good things about it as an entry level.

Personally, I'd save up and buy a Nightforce. Light years ahead of the Vortex PST (yes, i've owned one and a Razor 1-4x too).

Picked this one up for $950 if I recall...

How would you say the Nightforce compares to the Razor?

Much better, IMHO.

The Razor had nice glass - probably a TOUCH nicer than the NF - but it was heavier, and I didnt' care much for the FFP. I think it's not really necessary on a 1-4x optic. :)

Also, I had some 'issues' with the illumination on the Razor. They replaced it no questions asked, but it didn't inspire confidence. I owned a PST 6-24 as well, and the reticle came 'loose' inside, and had to replace that too. Vortex has lost its shine for me - still love the binos, but won't touch the scopes anymore.

Exposed turrets on the Vortex were really nice - but I'm not dialing in elevation that much on a <300m rifle. :)

I read the Burris MTAC or TAC30? is Filipino made vs US made for the XTR, some reviews aren't as favourable. For my 9mm AR i'm going to get a Vortex PST.

ok, so i am looking for something like this but CHEAP! anything cheap but effective? Or is that an oxymoron?
LOL
i just cant see spending this much to put it onto a norinco.

Good optics can always cost as much or more then the rifle you put it on.
My brother took my XCR with the vortex 1x4 today said it was decnt till the reticle went missing.

Guna get it sent in then sell it when it's fixed and buy another leupold.

I've only shot a few rounds through mine, its ok. But its big and heavy IMO. On my XCR mounted much like factionrr's it just about reaches the front buis, taking up almost the entire top rail. Weighs over a pound.. 18 oz. It came on the gun when i bought it, first thing i did was take it off and put a red dot on. I'm debating putting it back on there. Would i buy one? Hard to say, probably save up for a vortex or somethin a little better.

Edit.. I will never mount my millett dms on my norc ar. its just too big

if you want an absolute budget optic you can get an Optisan Mamba from tactical innovations with a mount for $250 it works. the tactile feel of the turrets does not exist, but it holds zero. the 1 is more like 2, just like most budget 1-4's are. the only true 1 power 1-4 is the NF, and it works just like a reflex sight.

Cheap, optisan, ok vortex, the best S&B short dot, best value for the money is the NF 1-4, it has a great field of view, is very robust, holds its resale value, and really is the best of all you are looking for. Sightron has a nice 1-8 as does USO, these are great options.

Hey you can start another "I love Vortex customer service/warranty" thread ;) I joke and I'm sorry to hear for your downtime. One nice thing tho is it won't be long. Dealt with them a few times now and that's why nothing I own will wear a Vortex product, like canuckchap mentioned problems come up just to often. I'm a little disappointed to here about the Razor HD having an issue as the Razor line still had me hoping and I was willing to give them another chance on the HD 1-6x. Rethinking now.

the downside to the XTR is the reticle is a little more complex..(IMHO)..just a bit more fluff than I care for. The Mtac and Fullfield tac 30 look identical, except the MTAC knobs and magnification ring look friendlier to use. They are all identical in size and weight.
I might just go with the tac30 as I was going to put a throw lever on the magnification ring anyhow. I don't care for the Burris fastfire, or mounting it on top...if it is anything like the Cmore STS, I don't think I will like it. I am thinking maybe a bigger windowed red dot like the 50mm Hi-Lux red dot....mounted off at 45 degrees.

Thanks for the heads up.

Optisan was an option I wasn't aware of.. Who carries them here?

Get an Elcan!
Looked through one at 300m and it looked as clear as if the bowling pin was on the bench in front of me!

I think it was a 1.5-6 but either way, great!, great!, optic and they make a 1-4 as well.

Just wanted to ask this again.. Any idea who carries those $250 Optisan scopes? Looked at TI, they had an Optisan Mamba for $200, but the reticule was better for hunting than for action shooting. The cheapest Mamba with a good reticule was the Mamba CQB, but it cost like $350. The only other one in the $250 price range was the 1.5-6, but I didn't like the reticule for fast acquisition either.

I like my Burris Mtac. I would not recommend it for accurate target work @ 200 yards because of the 2 MOA dot but the plus side it is supper fast target accusation

For $200 it may be a while before you find the perfect optic. Remember everything and I mean everything in an optic is a compromise. No optic is perfectly suited to all required tasks. The 1-4 mamba at 200 offers a great starting point for those needing just that. You want greatness then NF is the way to go. Perfection? S&B
