AR 1X4 optic choices

Ordered a Vision King as an entry-level optic.. We'll see how she goes.. It'll probably arrive just as I get my first poodle shooter. Is there a reasonably priced, easily removable mount so I can switch to BUS if anything happens to the scope?

I just ordered an ADM Recon SW mount from OSTS and I'll be ordering a VX-R Patrol 1.25x4 for my XCR to go with a new set of Troy BUIS. My experiences with optics is generally you get what you pay for. Sometimes you pay a lot and get less than your dollars worth and sometimes you pay a little and get more than your dollars worth. The latter is a much shorter list. I hope the vision kings work out, some cheap optics do perform above their price range. The best of the cheap flat top mounts is the Burris PEPR non-qd around $100 I think. You should be able to get a deal in the EE. Another cheap option is a 3/4" riser from eBay with the big carry handle-like thumbscrews that can be undone with a coin. Add some cheap rings for the height you want and off you go. Could be done for $20 on eBay.

Thanks for the tips. I have lots of respect for Ganderite's spirit of experimentation and marksmanship, so I figured, it's worth the risk. WCS, I'll mount in on the SKS lol Are PEPR mounts easily removable or do they require the use of a screwdriver in case the glass gets cracked and you wanna use the backups?

The standard model uses hex nuts with flathead slots. They could be removed with a coin, screwdriver or improvised tactical screwing device. The PEPR is also available with QD mounts like the ADM but I don't know what the price is.

$20 extra.. $125 @ Wolverine.. I'll probably go with that... By the way, is that how BUIS are mounted, so you have to remove the scope? I've never even held an AR, so I'm still unsure on all the ins and outs.

That's the joy of modularity! Folding BUIS is the way to go. Ideally having your rear sight folded with the ocular bell of the scope sitting above it. When you want to switch just swing the throw levers on the mount and remove it, then flip up your iron sights. Exactly which AR are you getting? With a fixed front sight and 1.5" height mount your front sight will obscure your view through the scope. You wont be able to cowitness the irons through the scope so its one or the other. With fixed sights you will need a taller mount to clear the irons. With folding sights you can use a 1.5" and have the same cheek weld with scope and irons.

Thanks for the clarification.. I was gonna get the Norc CQ-A in 14.5, remove the front sight and already got folding backups on the way.

Some updates:

1) T97 was approved and they're already working on bringing it into Canada (ETA mid-August), so I decided to take a pass on the CQ-A and wait until August

2) VisionKing scope arrived. I haven't mounted it on anything and won't for a couple of months. Ordered direct from the dealer's ebay account and the process was quick and painless other than the dumb ebay ITAR warnings (irrelevant for non-us seller to non-us buyer transactions, as I reported to ebay). Here are my initial thoughts on the scope:
-Optical clarity seems ok, I wasn't able to test against any high-end optics (Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 being my best piece so far lol), Able to see clearly edge to edge with no perceptible distortion
-Came without a battery but with lens caps and a cleaning cloth, WELL packaged and protected
-It has red and green donut illumination. Bleeds off at REALLY close ranges (5yds) but once you get past 10yds, it's crystal clear. At 1.25x, you can track with both eyes open
-There are noticeable differences in brightness between levels, which is not the case with most budget illuminated sights
-Windage and elevation adjustment knobs have screw-on caps, which is a drag, but this scope was more meant for "zero at X and hold for other distances" use. The clicks are VERY positive, no hunting. 1/4 MOA increments
-Instructions written by an ESL-er but not in Engrish and they make sense. Pretty proud of their manufacturing nowadays, even has the Chinese flag on the box :D

Edit: Just quickly tested outdoors in bright sunlight.. The reticule could be brighter, but it was still easily visible at all magnification levels
Edit2: The manual is talking about 25mm rings... The tube is 30mm.. My grandpappy always told me: "measure once, crush zero times" and I'm glad I listened
