AR accesories-what influences your decisions

I usually accessorize based on if it's been on "sons of guns" because I know if they built it, it's "never been done before":D

Awesome! :D

A complete collection. If you build a nice mrp type gun with great optics thats fine. The you have some crazy SPR build..thats ok to. Then you have a rifle length and a carbine length. Then you realize rails are heavy and so are optics so you do an old school build with handguards, carry handle and basic stuff.

Weight and use. I want to keep the weight of my AR (that isn't here yet!) down, as well, I know that I'm not going to be pushing it out past 40 yards.
That being said, my NEA AR, will be my light weight go-to AR, whereas, I'm already thinking that a deked out 'tacticool' AR will be in my future.

Obviously what you need / want on a rifle depends on what you are using it for.

Based on my very limited civilian-range-use-only experience (mostly ORA CQB and similar) having tried a number of different sights, slings, uppers, etc. I have come to the conclusion that lighter, simpler and more durable is best.

Under these conditions I am carrying the rifle and other gear most of the day, and don't really have time to mess with adjustments or repairs.

On my 14.5" with ambi safety (from ArmsEast) I have a BFG Viking sling with a DD single point mount (from OST) and a Trijicon TA33-H (from Daves).

That trash turns my gut, hollywooded crap TV at its finest doing their part to myth-inform the anti's. Good post BTW.

I prefer a basic perfect running rifle with optic for what I built it for. No GAK so to speak. I tend to only buy small stuff to try like slings, attatchment points, hand stops etc...

Thanks for all the posts, some good ones
Is my stick-on Costa beard considered a good accsy.?? LOL

I shot my AR stock for the first year. I got to know it, I talked to other shooters, examined their set ups, tried some gear, asked opinions, read reviews, read CGN and did my research.

Then I thought about what kind of shooting I wanted to do, then I examined availability and price.

Lastly, having taken all of the above into account, I looked at aesthetics.

Hopefully, it will all come together by the time the range thaws out! :D

Mission drives the gear. Too many people turn a "light weight carbine" into a show case of marketing must haves and the end result is an object that tips the scales more then a under exercised ten year old.

Utilize quality products that serve a purpose. Buy cheap buy twice.

I think the following are good ideas for AR type rifles: quality sling, quality light, quality optic in a quality mount. These make your carbine more capable.

Personally I like vickers slings, surefire x300 (or steamlight tlr1s), aimpoint t1 in larue mount. It costs money but in the long run it's worth it if you intend to run your gun hard.

I have very little interest in "toys". All of my guns are shooters and not used to hang impulse purchases on.

The only thing I've purchased that could be considered "influenced" would be my MagPul CTR, MOE grip and MOE handguard.

I tried several other people's rifles and went with the items that fit me well AND were not grossly over priced, like most items in the Canadian AR market.

I'm a fit and function, simplistic, kind of guy.

Curious why a light? Where is this used by civi shooters? Looking for information here, not slagging anybody.

Some of us train and shoot at night. Its that simple. :p

Also some of the black and green rifles are not restricted and have more uses than the range. Its dark 50% of the time why limit your self? :D

So you got a new AR or ???cool rifle. SHOOT THE f**k OUT OF IT and find out what you really need Now its time to add the goodies,
What influences what you buy?

Is it looks over function? or function over looks?

Fad,popularity or my d*ck will fall off if I don't have one of these?

brand name?
Novelty?
Price?
Do you buy just for the sake of buying or nescessity?

Just curious

See where I'm going with this?

Shawn

because it is illigal to shoot 1 hour before sunrise and one hour after sun down?
Legality asside... its a #### move to shoot after hours because people genraly live in earshot of the range...

but more to the question

1)Can I actualy get away with it on my C7
2) Does it fit on my C7?
3) Do I need it?
4) Qulity, will it last?
5) Price
