Hey folks,
I've been looking for a fun AR like .22LR plinker to have fun with.

I was looking at NEAs as they are somewhat cheap but I'm worried about quality as many people seem to have issues with them. However as far as looks are concerned, I really like their rifles.

I'm looking for:
1) .22LR
2) Something that looks like an AR15 as much as possible.
3) Restricted is fine with me as I only shoot at ranges.
4) Less than $900 CND
5) Something with picatinny rails.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Stef

Can always spend the money on a troy t22 CHASSIS for the ruger 10/22. They have either the sporter model with the troy alpha rail or you can get the tactical (if you can find it) that had a troy quad rail. They are a bit pricey but definitly gives you the look and feel of an AR. And will Dave you money if you already have a 10/22.

If you want the AR ergonomics and similar mechanics, definitely go with the Smith & Wesson M&P 15/22. When I have more room in my budget, I'm thinking of picking it and it's big brother up for practice and competitions...

I was looking into doing this years ago with my daughter.
Ended up purchasing a .22 insert (Ciener?) with black dog magazines.
I am glad I did because she got bored with the .22 within 3-4 range sessions and wanted to fire the .223 out of it.

We now mix up the session with .22 for reloading drills and getting technique correct (for whatever new drill we are learning) and then shooting .223 for score.
Being able to swap out between the two on a single platform has been beneficial for us.

YMMV

Moe version 15-22. Get them now while they're still reasonably priced. Mine eats anything in terms of ammo.

All of the rifles named are fine. The baby AR's are mostly restricted due to the RCMP fears. The SR22 is a customized 10/22 that is a pain to clean but, gives you that non-restricted option. I have a 10/22 that has been dressed up by Nordic Components who is the maker of the Sr. 22 clothing. Unfortunately it is also a PITA to clean however it is AR furniture compatible.

I would say, avoid the Mossberg 715t
I had one, it was not reliable unless cleaned thoroughly every 50 rounds, and by that I mean it would jam every few rounds and required a complete take down...
Speaking of the disassembly, there was 15 screws to remove, 1 large phillips, 11 small phillips, 1 tiny phillips, 2 hex/allen...then 2 pins...
The plastic shell looks and feels like a toy made in china.

I'll second that. I sold my 715T and I was so happy when I did. I took a loss on it, but I didn't care as the loss was better than having the useless gun taking up space in my safe. That said, the person who bought it loves it.... To each is their own I guess.

M&P 15-22 is the closest thing you'll get to an AR-15 other than buying a dedicated 22 upper for your AR.
I just bought a dedicated 22LR upper for my AR and it's probably the best way to go if you are getting it so you can practice with cheap ammo. If you don't already have an AR-15 (which you should ;)) then I'd go with the M&P as all reports I've read so far say it's reliable and well built.
I've tried the AR-15 22LR conversions where you replace the BCG with a 22 unit and the one I had was not reliable and the twist rate of a 223 is way too tight for a 22LR.

If you are buying it to have a rifle to practice AR-15 drills with then a 10/22 in any stock is not the right rifle for you as the magazine changes are nothing like an AR but if you just want to shoot 22LR and have a rifle that looks kinda cool then any of the options mentioned by others will work fine.
