AR like .22 plinker

What about a 10/22 with the ATI AR 22 stock?

i have a moe S & W mp15-22, a mossburg 715t and a ruger sr22.
mossburg is not worth it. cheap feel and not reliable
the s & w is the better of the lot especially for its true AR platform BUT if the restricted thing is a problem the ruger is the way to go.
i use the s & w at the range , the ruger for plinking at my buddys and the mossberg continues to take up space in my vault.

I was dead set on purchasing the Smith and Wesson M&P AR15-22. When I went into the local gun shop to purchase the S&W, the gun expert introduced me to the Ruger SR22 rifle. In comparing the two, I noticed the S&W was almost like a plastic toy gun where as the SR22 was all aluminium except for the stock and grip. Yes the SR22 is heavy, but it is solid in comparison and I only paid about $70 more than the S&W and walked out of the store with it the same day as opposed to have to wait for it to be registered.

Since the S&W is restricted, all mags have to be pinned to 10 rounds only. Having to reload mags with 10 rounds at a time with such cheap ammo stinks. There are multiple mags available for the SR22. I have purchased 2 25 round mags ($30 ea.) and a speed loader for them ($30). A 110 round drum mag is also available for $110. I use this at the range and later I will be taking it to the cottage with me for target practice. If this was restricted, I would be only allowed to take it to the range.

I have bought many aftermarket 'AR' type accessories (rails, rail acc., mounts, etc.) for this in store at very reasonable prices and from online Canadian distributors i.e. Colonel Mustard, Amazon and Dlask Arms.

In summary, I am a big Smith and Wesson fan, but because of it being restricted, I chose the fun route.

I agree 100% with ^^^^^ Swamp_Bully. I have both the M&P 15-22 and a 10/22 conversion in an ATI stock and the conversion gets much more use due to the NR classification. The M&P shoots better and handles much more like my AR but it only gets range time when I'm not shooting pistols or ARs at the range (which is almost never)

I'll second that. I sold my 715T and I was so happy when I did. I took a loss on it, but I didn't care as the loss was better than having the useless gun taking up space in my safe. That said, the person who bought it loves it.... To each is their own I guess.

:) bought a 10/22 ... I'm happy now. As of now I haven't sold my 715T yet...a friend of mine decline it saying he wouldn't even use it as a chair leg. My local store offered me only 40$ for it ( they sell used guns )

Buy an AR Lower and a Chiappa .22 upper. Can do it for around $600, then buy other uppers if and when you are ready to move up. I have had mine for over 2 years, and it eats everything. It is the bottom rifle.

ATI OMNI Gen 2 Hybrid uppers and Lowers make for a cheap and good AR .22lr solution.

I would pick the Chiappa or S&W. If restricted is fine go with the ones that actually like a AR15 and not a 10/22 or other company with AR stuff mounted.

Kill 2 birds with 1 stone buy a Norc AR15 and then get a 22 conversion kit.

I had a 715T and gave it to a friend who didn't have a .22. It was a pretty terrible gun: clamshell design that requires complete disassembly to clean.

I had a Ruger 10/22 in an ATI AR-22 stock kit. Looked cool, but again, was a pain to clean, not the same ergos as an AR15.

I have a Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 MOE. It is an awesome rifle with the same controls and ergos as an AR-15. The downside is that the factory mags are limited to 10 rounds but there are aftermarket mags available that are 25 rounds I believe. It is a good understudy gun, paired with my M&P22 pistol, it gives me a cheap CQB trainer.

I also have a CMMG conversion kit, but I never use it. The barrel on my AR leaded up so bad it was hard to get a cleaning rod down it. I also found the accuracy to be terrible with a 1/7" twist barrel.

I had a .22LR NEA dedicated upper, and it was suboptimal at best. Poor accuracy, no last shot bolt hold open, etc. It got returned quickly.

Hey Sqr,
Where did you order all the stuff needed to build that little beauty?

Thanks
Stef

Iron Eagle Tactical is where I purchased all of my 10/22 receiver and fore end pieces from. IE will ship to Canada without any paperwork or difficultly and have great service and a fine selection of parts on their web site to chose from. Nordic Components is the manufacturer of the hardware that is used for the Ruger SR/22 sans the Ruger logo.

I highly recommend them especially for a Non-Restricted AR plinker.
