AR Won't cycle or chamber next round

Hey guys,

I had a browse on here but couldn't find any prior posts that answered my question so far.

Here's my issue:

I received an AR on trade, and when I took it down to the range for the first time the first shot was fine, cycling the next round, but when I pulled the trigger the second time I got a 2 round burst :S followed by the gun not cycling the 4th round. After that the gun wouldn't cycle the next round. It ejects the empty casing, but seems that the bolt isn't coming back far enough to chamber the next round, either completely missing it, or grabbing it, but not pushing it into the chamber all the way.

I got a couple of new buffer springs, a new buffer, and took it down to the range again today to try my new parts to see if this would fix the problem. Unfortunately it did not, and the issue persisted just as before. For some reason I even got one instance of it shooting two rounds in a row :S

I tried combinations of my two new springs with the old buffer and the new buffer and nothing seemed to work, even tried a couple different weights of bullets (all factory ammo). After the two round burst again, I decided to put her away to be on the safe side and call it a day and continue to trouble shoot the issue. I have searched the issue online, but am having troubles pin pointing what it could be.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated :D and please only positive helpful comments.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers

check the gas rings on the bolt, the 3 should not line up ( the gaps). change your gas tube- the silver thing over the barrel. check your ammo, is it handloads? did you have a bad day reloading?

I'll check the gas rings right now, I thought it could be the gas tube, but from what I've read those should last a very long time and rarely cause greef. As for the ammo I'm using, it is all factory loads (as stated in my original post), and I've tried a few variations in weight and manufacturer (rem, win etc.)

AR 15 or AR 10?
Length of barrel?
type of buffer?
In what condition is the hammer (you seem to have had a double tap)?
When you shoot ''2 round bursts', does the 2nd round goes off when you release tension on the trigger? or when your finger is still applying tension on the trigger?

The buffer I ordered is just a Brownell's carbine buffer, and the buffer that came with the gun is the same length and seems like the same weight, but I am unsure of the make.

would i be wasting my time/money replacing the gas block and gas tube? I just hate to do that, because I may as well save a bit and get a piston conversion kit.

the gas tube is cheap, replace it. dont replace the gas block. i fix small arms for a living, most times when a c7/c8 does what yours did i change the gas rings and replace the gas tube. fixes the problem.

does a shell drop all the way into the chamber by itself ?

did you find both shells that ejected ? you may have blown a case appart in the chamber leaving some brass in the neck of the chamber making it so the shell wont go in all the way.

does the bolt move smothly in the action and slide out the back of the reciever fine ?

Yeah the shells drop in all the way, and no brass in the receiver, and the bolt does move smoothly and slides out the back of the upper fine.

For your short recoil issue, do as Angrysoldier said: remove, replace/clean gas tube and change your gas rings. these parts are cheap!

To remove the gas tube, you need to remove the roll pin from the gas block and pull the gas tube rearward. I'll probably be stuck in place because of carbon build up.

I'll give that a whirl, I'm just surprised it would be something to do with the gas tube, as everywhere I read online says that gas tubes should never need cleaning, and are rarely the cause of any malfunctions unless someone has attempted to clean it, and there is crap stuck in it (from whatever one would use to clean it).

I guess my next question as well is where the best place to purchase these parts would be. I am planning on purchasing a new firing pin as well, figure I may as well. I checked Questar for gas rings and couldn't find any. I found all the parts I need on Brownell's who I have ordered quite a few things from in the past, but I'm unsure whether they would send the firing pin up this way. If I could purchase within Canada i would prefer to do that, may as well support business up here!
