Are 7.5 shot Target Loads ok for Grouse?

;)try #6, and we'll speak again, perhaps!

The "only" time I go to #6's is in late season, combined with a tighter choke for long flushing pheasant and sharptails. #7 1/2 is the all around best upland choice IME... and frankly could likely do just as well in the late season also.

Given the way the OP is working the boards about his first grouse hunt, there is a good chance that he is going to psyche himself out. Just get out and do it, it aint that complicated!

I tried 7.5 and even early season they flushed too far to knock down. I will try #6 for my area. If they flush really close to you, then 7.5 with IC or skeet choke is best. But they were flushing from further away.. so I will try modified / #6 next time.

Man that wingshooting in brush is not easy. Very challenging. Still haven't successfully taken one out yet! Northern Ontario bird is a joke compared to this.

Yes, absolutely correct. Take your time out there. Mark the spots you flush the birds. Check those spots out later. Best excuse you will ever have for a walk in the bush. Good luck.

7.5 is good..

of course it all matter how close they are when you shoot.. I took a nice ruffie this weekend with #6 at 8 yards.. lets just say.. Puff of feathers, and a lot of mess to clean up.. managed to save a lot of meat, but lots of waste. (damn!)

At 8 yards if it was standing and you know your gun well enough you could have cut his head off by shooting a bit above it. No muss no fuss that way. Or did you flush it and blow it out of the sky?

it took off just as I pulled the trigger.. head shot turned in to a body shot.. grouse donut ;)

#8 is also my choice. 2 ruffs were behind a fallen log, just the heads sticking up. Lined them up... Dream set up. One shot, modified choke, decapitated both...dinner for two later that night, not one pellet in the body.
