I have used #6 as well, and i prefer #7-1/2. I have even used #8 Golden Pheasant loads in my 28 gauge, and they do a great job. I prefer the #6 loads for pheasant though.

of course it all matter how close they are when you shoot.. I took a nice ruffie this weekend with #6 at 8 yards.. lets just say.. Puff of feathers, and a lot of mess to clean up.. managed to save a lot of meat, but lots of waste. (damn!)
At 8 yards if it was standing and you know your gun well enough you could have cut his head off by shooting a bit above it. No muss no fuss that way. Or did you flush it and blow it out of the sky?
