Are Big Buck contests unethical?

The local fish and game club sponsors a big buck contest every year here. It was full of corruption the first two years, but the guilty parties were, fortunately, found out and stripped of their prizes. It's been a fairly well run enterprise since.

Hurry up and make a decision guys....he's walking slowly towards the bush now and Im gonna lose my chance.........are we or aren't we......???? lol

We run one up here the same as Sasquatch. Our provision is the animal must be taken in alberta and to be eligible, you must be a member of our club on September 1st.

.............to each their own. I attended one of those once. I never had an interest in attending ever again. My reward was always being off from work, hunting in the beautiful outdoors and providing meat for myself. The last thing i want to do is attend some "Big Buck Night". I have had my fill of the attitudes that attend those things from being a member of the range i used to go to.

.........nothing like getting to the range at 7:00am and having it all to your self when a fella pulls up with his 14 year old son and all they do is jabber about "not going to pull the trigger unless its over 150 class" and their main goal for the year is to win the new Weatherby.

Big buck nights are what you make them. They are fairly common in the small town pubs across SK. It's a good way to make money for them, and somebody gets bragging rights for a while.

Rather than having a cash prize for biggest, why not have awards? Do the 50/50 thing as a door prize, and have lots of different awards for Sr mens, Sr ladies, Typical and non typical mens and ladies, JR classes... you get the idea.

Make it a supper night, have local hunters donate roasts, charge the $25 per plate, all profits to the club?

Lots of different ideas, but the thought of a cash prize for biggest animal leaves a funny taste on my mouth for some reason. Kind of runs against some of the reasons that I hunt. YMMV

It's a good way to make money and should be a memorable night, if you can get the scummy cheater thing figured out.

At the end of every season who hasn't brought pictures in to show their buds "What they got"? I don't hunt racks but when I get one I will show it off. Most of us are like that or are in denial or watch Harry Potter.

Although I guided for quite some time when i was yopunger, i was never one myself for big game scoring, B&C heads, or what have you.
I entered one bear one year on pressure form the club, and got the trophy for it.
It was not a huge bear, I have killed bigger ones in both hide and sckull, but that one was a particularly close shot af ter a stalk, with a muzzle loader, so I was proud of it.
I was told it was small and just made "Pope and Young" , which is the Archery system.
I was not impressed.
Our system these days is based on fun, with the rifle being one by any entry, in fact last years was won by a spiker!
We have a silent auction, door prize, and a great pot luck supper as well.

Just to clarify, we have several 'trophy' awards each year- you get alittle plaque and bragging rights.

We have a huge banquet every year, and part of it is the awards, butthey are a small part.

usually 350-400 peopel show up, not bad for a towm of 1800.:)

Why not just hand out participation medals and citizenship ribbons? "Ooh I got a Boone and Crocket condom for talking big!" C'mon once in awhile nailing a big buck can be put down to luck but usually it is the end result of a lot of hard work and dedication.

We alson have trophies foprn the biggest heads in each cateegory, and plaques forn secondd and third.
The rifle is a draw however.

The Boone and Crockett society and the Pope and Young were set up to honour the biggest and best of the animals, not the person who killed them.
It has turned into something else these days.

I dislike the taking of only bucks. I have seen over the years the animals getting smaller around here. I think it is because the best bucks are not left to do the breeding. If you are a cattleman, you do not cull your best bull every year. Just my opinion.

why would they even think of questioning the contest.looks like it would be a lot of fun

You could change the contest to Best Hunting picture, Closest Stalk picture, Best Hunting Camp picture, Funniest Animal Expression picture, etc.
