Are feral hogs a problem in Canada?

There were a couple small farmers in the vicinity a number of years ago that tried raising these pigs and discovered that there was no real market for them. Reportedly, the pigs where just released. There were charges laid at the time, but like so many other things, it was all hush, hush.

There likely could have been a better market if the prices weren't so ridiculous. I am kinda relying on memory, but if I recall correctly, a regular cheeseburger used to sell for about $2.50. Locally sourced boarmeat burger was $6.50 at a local restaurant that mostly served cottagers either on the way to their cabin, or on the way back. I don't know what that translates into today's money exactly, but a guess would be $3.50 vs. $9.00.

Think zebra muscle.

Wow! I am surprised they moved that far South! They were in the Mars Hill GMA seemingly forever, and most of the reports over the last decade (or so) showed movement mostly to the East.

So have you hunted them in Mars Hills? I spent a fair amount of time deer hunting there, and always expected to see them, but never did. Mind you there is some pretty tangly, and swampy bush around there that I never did get into.

Nah, didn't have to ---- I lived right next to the guy who was ranching them. The RCMP put the kibosh on taking ANY of them (even when they were on my property), but, we used to see them all the time while sledding through the area. They aren't stupid mammals so I discovered ---- they LOVED the snowmobile trails, and those suckers? They can RUN!!!

Why would the Federales try to stop the taking of boar? What retarded thinking is behind this?:runaway:

you just answered this question in your question.
He just said the RCMP did it .
and you asked what retard could do that.

AKA RCMP must = retarded?

do not venture into the Libau biological bog! Signs are posted where it is. If you do, you ain't coming out! There is no "bottom" in there! There are no more boar around to be seen, anyway. If they are still around, you will never see one in the day light hours.

so you iz talk'en Vickies Snack bar? Not quite 2.50 to 6.50, but there was a little difference. They also served Elk burgers and Bison burgers for somewhat more than a beef burger. The fries are real good, get a gravy on the side!

The rationale I received was, that by default, since the animals were being ranched, they fell under The Husbandry Act even though these animals aren't expressly described. In short, hunting these boars was essentially the same as hunting a stray cow, horse, pig, etc.

In the larger picture, I think what they were trying to avoid was mass hunting of those boars that became free ----- I guess they figured that there would be a mass of crazy people just out to shoot these boars and not harvest the meat. I can't say this wouldn't happen, but to my knowledge, I don't think the RCMP did enough to control what is now a problem. If I understand correctly, the huffing & puffing of the RCMP on this matter worked; I don't recall anyone being formally charged despite knowing full well that a few were harvested.

could you shoot one if it was stealing from your garden? LoL

They did the same thing around here for a bit from what i hear..
But obviously the wild boars got out of a control pretty fast.

its not hard to find these things but most are on other farmland too.

3 months/3 weeks/3 days = gestation period for pregnant sows yielding a litter of 8-10 piglets. And you're right, they ARE often on private farm land, but many of the farms out in that area are measured in sections; not acres. Not to mention, the GMA is some 8200 acres ---- almost 13 square miles of roaming space which is Crown Land.

Could have been Vickies, but I seem to think I actually saw it at Steve's. Keep in mind, this goes back to 1998.

If you were in your garden, AND there was one there, AND it charged at you, OR you felt threatened by it's presence AND if you had the foresight to come into the garden with a suitable firearm, then YES - at least, that was the interpretation of the law, so sayeth the Detachment Commander of the local RCMP
