Are Remington 870's Really Garbage Now ?

I've always liked the 870's because they just fit me right for trap & hunting and because of the
huge aftermarket for accessories for them. The one I use for trap started out as a Tactical Desert Recon
model that I paid $675.oo new for in '07. This particular gun is nothing but an Express model with a crap
"ceramic" green coating that started flaking off soon after I started using for trap. I took that crap finish
off and Arma Coated it in battleship grey.

The barrel fit loose in the receiver and had a piss-poor bore finish as well. I've given this gun a good going over
and it has been through a few upgrades to get it to where it now suits me just fine for both trap shootin' and
huntin'. Best recommendation I can say is to order up a Carlson's replacement barrel for any of the newer 870's
and fit it with either Carlson's or Comp-N-Choke tubes for your type of shooting, be it trap, skeet or hunting.
The Carlson's barrels are available in numerous lengths and have chrome lined bores & chambers and finished
in a smooth matte black finish. Made in Turkey, these fit the Remmy receivers pefectly snug and the bores are
mirror smooth. I got my barrel from Al's Corner Store in Arnprior as they are a Carlson's rep.

All that stuff blabbed, I can't boast about Mossberg barrel quality neither, because their bores and chambers are
just as rough as the Remmy ones. I had to do a fair bit of forcing cone work & Flex-Honing of my Mossy barrel
to get it up to snuff as well.

The motto is, as always, if yer want 'er done right, do 'er yerself and shop careful for extras.
Be aware to spend some effort & money on these buggers though to get 'em to yer liking.:)

1st. re-work on my 870.

What's the consensus on buying an 870 Tactical Express, say a model 25077 (18" barrel, 6+1 rounds) ($400 aprx) and sending it away to be "parked" and upgraded with 870P parts, as suggested earlier in the thread by badboybeeon on page 6 (sjhardware.com)? This would seem to address any factory deficiencies while keeping the price down. Sounds tempting...

I've taken and instructed numerous shotgun courses where the only shotgun used was the Remington 870. We've had MINIMAL issues with the 870. No more than you'd expect from any other firearm. I would have no issue owning an 870 Tactical.
