I know alot of Winchester guys who will not shoot a push feed M70, I had a M70 Stealth that was a Push feed and very accurate and am just wondering why many people dispise the post 64 M70's?? How do they differ from a Remington?

Cheers!!

They're still Mod. 70s so light years better than a Rem..... Just kidding, I just happen to like Mod. 70s. My brother has all push feed Mod. 70s and loves them.

They work fine, it is just that most of us want all the bells and whistles....which is why it irritates me immensely that Winchester does not put dovetails on their rifles.

Win 70 Push Feeds....

My one & only Win 70 at the moment is an XTR push feed in .30-06. I picked it up at a gunshow many years ago & chose it because it has a 24" factory barrel with iron sites. Wanted it as a back-up rifle for my .300 Win Mag on moose hunts. It has never been a disappointment. Very accurate with that longer than average pipe & a joy to shoot. Thought about selling her many times over the years but just can bring myself to part with her. Guess she's a 'keeper'.................

Nothing wrong with the push feed m 70. It was just gun writers like Jack O who seemed to make their living pining away about the good ole days that convinced readers that the old m 70 was actually a better gun. I doubt if Jack knew what he was talking about, but Winchester's bread and butter was giving Jack's readers what they wanted.

I have several of both types--no difference in reliability and most are quite accurate for factory rigs--I just like their lines better than the others.

If the Win 70 was made as a push feed from day 1 it would have been promoted as a great rifle...they are very good actions IMHO. Usually smoother than a 700 with a better extractor and a foolproof trigger and a "safer" safety. I've owned a handful over the years, my brother has one in 7Mag from 1975, never a problem with it.

The only difference is the following.

Controlled feed you can flip the gun upside down and load it since the round is "captured" by the claw. (More a military application IMHO).

Push feed actually surrounds the case head/rim completely when closed (supposedly a tad stronger action because of it).

Accuracy difference? Zip.
Mechanical Extraction Difference? Zip.
Opinions on why one is better than the other? Too many...

If it feeds well, shoots every time, and you hit what you aimed at, then it's a good gun :)

I own a couple of CRF rfiles and a a bunch of push feeds. I've never had a failure to extract from either style and with proper handloads there shouldn't be any problems with either.

That's not true ........ I did have an extraction failure with a Husqvarna CRF once because there was some very minor rusting in the chamber holding the empty cases. Extractor ripped the rim off.
