Are the Valmet M78 worth the money?

I own one and sold the other, and been collecting parts to build a nice M76 308 clone. I'm thinking hard of selling the parts and giving up on this project due to cost and finding parts. The cheapest mag I've found was $200 but most are over $300 if you can find one! Been thinking about this a crap load over the past year. I will not sell my mint M78 but sure thinking of tanking the other build. Any thoughts? I see this going over $5000 with parts and 308 hunter less extra mags.

For myself I would not spend the money on a Valmet It is all about personal choice, so what may seem expensive to me may not be such an expense to someone else.

I think they are. They go for just as much, if not more in the USA... 7.62x39 Version is awesome. Lovely guns.

Most people that talk bad about them have never held one.

The cost of parts for this build is the down fall for me. Finding them is fun, paying for them is not! Anyone wants some M76 parts? Think I will give up on it. Pistol grip front hand guard and front site are the parts I will part with or trade for m78 308 mag

Worth the money? No. Don't get me wrong, they're very nice, but given the choice, I'd just own a Galil, AK47, and AK74.

I'm in the middle of a couple Valmet projects... may be interested in some parts...

Says the guy pouring god knows how much money into a hunter to make it a galil clone.

Don't get me wrong, love the project, but that is by far the most "do as I say not as I do" comment on CGN ever haha.

Haha, you've got me - I own two, and am into them for a small fortune, but that doesn't mean I think they're really worth the money! They're just the only real AK game in town here in Canadaland.

Oh I get it. Still, owning one is way less cheaper than being allowed to own many. Not that I like the prohibition, but I'd probably be way poorer if they weren't.

I seen that nice m71 clone on the EE not move complete. Nice build in 223 and what's what really got me thinking. See I'm bad for doing builds then selling after there complete, so with this in mind, I think it would be a loosing venture. Just going to stick with the one m78 I have.

I know what you mean - I've been tempted to pick up a Hunter .308 to build a PSL/Tiger/SVD-ish clone, but I'd probably just sell it when it was done, too.

Totally wanted that gun. And I'm sure it was worth the money from what it cost to build it into that. Nice clean build.

it is worth $1000 but all his brothers were called AK and prohibited because of that
so now he is worth $3000.

Why does everyone insist on paying $5000 for these when they can be found for shy of $3000???

And, if the price was for the reasons you state, it doesn't explain why they sell for the same price point in the US when there are so many more options.

The Valmet is the Cadillac of the AK world. That is why they fetch the prices they do, both here and in the US.

No, I disagree. Not tryin' to jump on you but thinking closer to $2000-$2500 us all day long with what that rifle came with. Milled not stamped as well. I must admit I droll over the ones that come up for sale state side. Love to have a m76 wood stock in 308. Dream on right!

Fenceline. What did you get for $2800? Was that USD? If so did that include import fees, USD monetary transaction fees, FFL transfer, gst, and shipping with insurance?

Imported out of the US. Total import was $2800. Dollar was at par. Receiver was milled. M78 in 308.

That being said, I've seen them here for $3500 as well. Not often, but there are available to those who are really looking, and not just complaining about the high price of a gun they haven't, or won't actually be buying. Just not that often on the EE.

The $5000 is high.
