Are we getting robbed on Mosin's?

Admittedly, I have a serious crush on the Mosin-Nagant, and to say I have a few of them is fair. One thing I cannot help but notice is the drastic price difference between the ones sold by Canadian retailers, and those down in the States. Considering you can get a hand picked Mosin for under $100 dollars in the US, while paying $160 for, lets be honest, the crappiest rifle in the crate, I cannot help but think we are getting a bit ripped off. Thoughts?

Too many regulations differences between our countries to make blanket statements like that... For instance, ppl pay up to 500 or more for SKS' that we pay under 200 for. Income taxes are also different. Makes for an apples to oranges comparison.

Or over $1000 for SVT-40, or AG-42 while we pay about $300 for each up here.
 
I read on SRF that the batch from Classic was a "sale" price. Most big chain US shops seem to be at about $165 before the transfer fee and tax.
You can pick up a "shooter grade" from west rifle for $160 with free shipping. I value shipping at $30 so your paying about $130 for the rifle. There are worse deals to be had.
 
If you don't like the price, don't buy it.

If you can convince enough people to agree with you, then the suppliers will need to lower their price to move their product.

Its not robbery, its market forces.

Typical Canadian complaint...."I don't want to pay that much, so it must be theft......." ( or is it just certain members of this board....)
 
I was in the US during this Christmas break. I visited a few gun stores. ALL the MN had electro-hammered import (graffiti) marks on the receivers in plain view. Totally destroying the rifle as a desireable piece. Prices ranged from $159-179.
 
SVT40s for 200 bucks, 91/30shooters for 160, SKS for 150 bucks, and recent batch of M38 shooters for 250 bucks... I don't see things as bad.

Sure we can have some price fluctuation and rise and fall in market prices, but the US has 100 times as many firearm owners as we do, which makes them a completely different market with different export restrictions. Some things just are not even and cant compare by price alone.

I've made a lot of purchases this last 2 years, and I'm not complaining about anything.
 
No complaining about guns that cost less than $200! I have several, paid anywhere from $110 to $200 dependant on condition and desirability. No feelings of getting ripped off here. I've long come to terms with the fact that the only way to get US pricing is to move to the US. It's been that way pretty much as long as I've been alive and it's unlikely to change anytime soon. No sense in getting worked up about it.

Steiner, I don't like the electro pencil import marks anymore than you do but unlike electro penciled SINs, these have been mandated by some governments, including the US. They are now historic markings and the nature of the beast.

Look at the way Lee Enfields are stamped when sold out of service. Do you curl up you nose at any of them????? In all honesty, I have never seen an example of a Lee Enfield without the sold out of service marks commanding higher prices.

It's the same with the riveted SKS mags that the guys in the US say are ugly. But the Gov't mandates it so we do it. I guarantee those guys down south would change their tune in a heartbeat if our sweet Russian SKS's suddenly became available to them. Our rivets are their import stamping...

I was on Vacation in U.S. ( Maine) last august . The Mosin's at a shop there were $100 and had way better quality stocks then what i have seen here lately.

Sure there might be a few rifles with crappy and beat up stocks but that doesn't force you to buy one. I have yet to pick up a Mosin with a bad stock, shooter grade or otherwise. They might be 50 or 80 dollars more but there are still many rifles in pristine condition to be had without paying a premium from the going rate. There are so many places selling Mosin rifles, why buy a bad one?
 
"...sold by Canadian retailers, and those..." Geezuz. Forget U.S. prices for anything. You don't live there. Think economics. Ten times the population for a start. Much lower taxes and wages too.
"...I don't see things as bad..." That's your age showing. All of those used to be well under $100, the SVT's included. Mind you, you couldn't get ammo for 'em. That's why Globco ravaged all those SVT's.

It makes my head hurt when people can't grasp that lower wages / taxes usually means a lower wage too; I keep thinking perhaps if I speak slowly and keep the words small, they might understand.
Sadly, usually the answer is no.
Canada is a great country and I'm proud to live here. We pay more , but we also make more.
