I am talking to one of my co workers about purchasing his type 38 Arisaka. it has a ground mum, dust cover and the bore is decent and the stock is what you would expect of a rifle of that era! what should I offer him? I was thinking 650?

Also does the ground mum mean it was more likely to have seen action?

Cheers!

myself i wouldn't pay more then $400 just the fact that ammo is so hard to come by. but others will let you know what they think. pics do help.

It would have to be in excellent condition inside and out with a ground mum for me to pay $400. Even that would be a stretch. VG condition would fetch maybe $300.

It's possible the rifle saw action but the Mum being ground was to deface the emperor's symbol so as not to embarrass him. It was done by occupying decree after Japan surrendered and was occupied.

did you get it? I am very

interested in 38 too.

If you're interested in shooting the 6.5x50 Japanese round, you may have issues finding proper diameter bullets to fit the bore.

I've had several over the years, the odd one had shot out and pitted bores, but most of them were VG to EXC.

Even the EXC bores required .268 diameter bullets to shoot well.

Ignore these prices mentioned. No way in heaven or hell you can get an Arisaka for $400, destroyed mum or not. It's like I always see on this forum "Ooooh I won't pay more than $50 for an all matching Russian moist-nugget, that's how much they were worth!" That was 20-30 years ago. Good luck finding a good (all matching in grease) Mosin-Nagant for less than $500 anywhere today. As for your mentioned Arisaka I'll be surprised if he takes your $400 offer, or he might, if he knows nothing of what he owns. Your suggested price is actually closer to facts than what the other members suggested.

Sure, show proof. You can't? Thought so.
Whatever bud. Your just pissy because I found them for less than what you paid. But CT was selling them for under 200$. So wasn't un common to find them for 100.

But hey apparently Im some liar and make up prices. Im sure if I ask snider shooter. He would say he seen them go for that low. I mean I bought SKS for 75$. And I was living here and that going on 9 years. Where I bought a SKS for 200$.

Probably because those estimates were made 10 years ago lol
Not so.

There was time, appx 30 years ago, when you couldn't give a surplus Japanese rifle away, except with a relatively small bunch of knowledgeable collectors.

Just like the Italian Carcano, they had received a lot of bad press from the mainstream media (propaganda) to downplay the worthiness of the enemy's battle rifles. Those who knew better knew that drive for what it was.

However, the stigma stuck in some minds to present day thinking.

Both the Arisaka and Carcano were proven to be very capable and strong. The Arisaka, actually surviving strength tests, done by accredited individuals and governments, over K98s, Springfield 03s, and others.

Over the past ten years, Arisaka rifles with and without crests have, like most surplus rifles, been steadily increasing in value.

Like most surplus rifles, matching numbers, rare manufacturers, rare dates, and of rare conditions or accessories, types such as sniper or carbines, will dictate value.

The excellent condition specimens will easily fetch more than a pristine Lee Enfield, and easily hold prices with similar condition Mausers.

Many folks are still stuck in the old magazine ads in firearms magazines from the 60s to 90s. Most of those firearms, at very low prices for the time, were serviceable at best, some were Very Good. Most were Good Only.

The excellent grade rifles were still in storage or had been sold off at premium prices in the twenty years following WWII, Korea.

Today, wannabee collectors strive to get the best of the mid grade rifles.

The premium grade rifles always brought premium prices, other than for a few very short years.

I KNEW it! I knew someone like you would, instead of just providing proof of a $80 receipt for a Mosin Nagant TEN years ago, start the sentence with "Whatever".

I'd be GLAD if you can back up what you said, because I'm always happy for ANY milsurp collector getting a good deal. Why would it bother me if you or anyone getting better deal than me? Don't make any sense to me, and puzzling too. But now I get it, I guess YOU are the type that gets jealous when someone gets lucky with a trade, shows how much you're worth. I also don't like liars (or old farts who's too old to remember the difference between ten and THIRTY years) with their made up imaginary prices.

Like I said, I AM now calling you a liar. $80 Mosin Nagants 10 years ago? Lol you should be a comedian.

You really think I got PMs from 10 years ago, for the 80$ mosin deal?

Around 10 years ago.

I don't know why you being a c unt and #######?

So yeah could find them for 130 to 160.. Then finding one used for 80 to 100 wasn't un common.

Bet going to say a No5 couldn't be found for 250$ either. Did buy one at local shop for that much as well.
