Artillery projectile questions for the experts

Question 1: As a matter of fact, I know quite a bit about it, but I am not at liberty to discuss it at this time. If it ever becomes a matter of public record, no problem.

Question 2:Yes

Aww that sucks, well if the info becomes public then you need to give me a nice old pm about it. I just want to know the basics, what round it was, why the hell was it in an elementary school (ww2 training maybe?) and was it live or not. but meh, doesen't bother me much.

Back in 76 when I worked for the CE section at Cold Lake, I got on a crew fixing up targets on the air weapons ranges there. We were told NOT to touch any of the gazillion or so practice bombs that litter the ground near the targets (usually old cars, the odd tank, painted dayglo orange), as approx 10% hadn't gone off. We were also told that while the charges were small, they might take off a hand or a foot. You really learned to watch where you put your feet...
Good times.

Might not bother you, but if it turns out to be live, it might embarrass severly the local chief of police!! If you read the newspaper article in the Medicine Hat News, you will know what I'm talking about.

Myenfield,
It looks like you have 2 Arty smoke rounds for sure. The unusual one could be High Explosive (HE) but I don't think so. Don't go by looks, these are not safe. Recommendation; set them carefully outside away from buildings or people and call the local police and they will bring in the right dudes to handle them. Some of this old stuff gets a tad unstable as it matures. These are not keepsakes, they can be really dangerous if manhandled or subjected to knocks or heat or..or. Get the picture?

thats good...

otherwise we would have been laffing at you on the 6;00 news after the 'authorities' had saved us from another terrorist threat

lets see the 'safe' boom stuff.....sounds like you have a good stash

Post #156. You can see most of the "boom stuff" here and there in the photos. Acutally, the guys that came to get the shells seemed like pretty decent fellows. They probably would have been cool with a tour of my junk room. A couple of the police officers I spoke with on the phone during this, I'm not so sure about...

And please, people, read my earlier posts before giving me a hard time. The shells are long gone and I'm already working on my next dilemma :D.

I've been thinking about posting pics here for quite some time, now I have finally gotten off my butt and done it. Here are a few views of my gunroom. I have a thing for military stuff, mostly Commonwealth.

Just out of curiosity, can anybody confirm what the rusty old thing on top of #1 is ? Doesn't look like a fuze but more of a shipping/safety plug to me ....

As far as the fuzes for #2 and 3 are concerned, looks like the design of them is pretty clever (I'll have to look up the diagrams over the weekend, I just love finding out how mechanical things work).

Others can supply more detail, but the rusty thing on top of #1 was a screw off protective cap for the impact detonator. It appeared to be used to prevent a major "oops" when handling and/or shipping. It still came off, but I left it on just in case.

Ref the arty rds do your self a favor , Carefully take to a open space away from anyone and call 911 and say look what I found going for a walk they my be really dangerous

Wrong. DO NOT MOVE! This is an old thread, but for general reference you should never advise anyone to move potential explosive ordnance. It maybe safe to do so and it may not be. Can you positively identify nature, caliber, condition, etc from a photo? If not you are not in a position to provide such advice. Just because an item has been moved once does mean it can safely be moved again.
