Assault rifles and SMGs?

I know Wikipedia is the new Encyclopedia Americana for the children of the '80's, but getting back to one of my questions, if an HK MP5 has a semi auto (SE) trigger group, is that firearm a carbine, SMG, rifle, howitzer, pistol??? What is it? And there are numerous examples of that 'style' of firearm.

Again, if you want to call it a carbine, where do we put that definition, as it was first called in reference to the short Italian cavalry rifles, that term was originated for? Carbine was not conceived for pistol calibre firearms, it's a rifle.
To answer your question: 'pistol-caliber carbine' would be the most accurate term, ala the Hi-point 9mm carbine.

Pistol calibre carbine.. OK, makes up a new definition, so I guess that means we, up north, are fine with calling our semi automatic rifles, 'assault rifles'.:)

I didn't make anything up, it's a commonly accepted term. Call them whatever you want. You're going to insist that you're right, no matter what anyone says to the contrary anyway.

BTW 'assault weapon' is a term invented by left-wing politicians. An 'assault rifle' has it's history rooted in Nazi germany, as per the wikipedia entry that I've posted. And yes, I realize it's considerd sorta lame by some to cite wiki in online debates. But in this instance, I agree with wiki 100%.

I don't know, but " Sport Utility Rifle " may be a more respectable term, and more likely to attract soccer moms to our ranks.:D

I only wish I could take my "semi-auto" converted guns down to the states and sell them for what they pay for whats in the "machinegun pool" I could almost retire. As could Koldt and quite a few others on this board .once an mg always an mg.. batf rules .BTW are Mg42's still selling for about $25.000 how about a mint Vickers what are they worth now ...or a mint Stg44 or a mint 1919A4 Saganaw Gear what about destructive devices?I think my 14.5 Russian ATG is a big no no in the U.S. it's weird we can have quite a few items you can't and vice versa .

Wow this thread nearly gave me a head ache, but made me think a bit about it.

Has anyone ever applied for class 12.3 "full auto" licence and got accepted in canada ?? Lately i mean.

Just curious, no one freek out on me !!!

that's the whole point of grandfathering- it 'CLOSES the door" as far as new registrants and weapons are concerned while not confiscating those already out in the world- of course, to criminals, who get them by nefarious means, it means nothing- just like the rest of the system- oh ,btw, 12(2) is full auto, 12(3) is c/a- which should be nothing new since about 78, and roughly about 94, respectively

don't hold your breath waiting ...it's a shame that when myself and others like me who own these guns croak they will be destroyed .that is after the youngest one of us gets them all first.my daughter loves my Vickers I may have to dewat it before i die so she can have it .
