A'stan deployment weapon essentials?

I very strongly agree with Savage - do not modify any of the personal protective equipment or the weapon you are issued. Modifications to service kit is a service offense, and may be unsafe as it has not been tested.

Are you talking about KAC M4/M5 RAS's and ACOGs? To my best knowledge using the issued Tri-ads and C79s is what's unsafe.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm limiting this thread to weapon mods only. Gear wise I think I'm enough of a gear whore to pick the right slings, chest rigs, etc.

All the advice is great. My buddy is on the East coast for some training so can't find out what his unit allows.

Yohann:

Yes.

Use the issued kit. It is one thing to get a better holster for around KAF, but using ACOGs and rails and all of the other stuff that is not authorized is both stupid and a service offense.

If you want to go out and use an ACOG then go for it...but if you negligently shoot someone because the ACOG does not shoot POA with C77 ball then you get to wear the charge. If you put the RAS on your C7 or C8 and it causes the rifle to malfunction when you are under contact and that puts your section at risk then that is your choice.

I'm not saying that ACOGs and RAS (and other such toys) are not good, but unless your chain of command authorizes you to use them - which they won't in regular force units- don't use them.

A good rule is to think what the Sgt Maj will say if he sees you with the kit. A holster or a sling may not be an issue - tricking out the C8 with an ACOG and a RAS will best case get you a whole lot of extras or a charge.

Of course YMMV and are free to do as you wish and accept the consequences accordingly.

My recommendation - Let the chain of command and/or his mates with previous rotos sort out what he REALLY needs versus what you THINK he needs.

the best thing you could get him ios a bolt on single point sling mount and a single point sling..... has to be so he does not have to take the weapon apart to install.

Single point slings suck in my opinion. If you take a knee your muzzle ends up in the dirt and the rest of the time the rifle bounces off your crotch unless you are holding it.

An article by Larry Vickers opened my eyes to this...he also says climbing ladders, over obstacles are an issue with a single point. I've never done this with a rifle but it makes sense to me....

Remember No RAS

Really No RAS or no ACOG

Issue kit in parade square turnout is very important...

Are you for real? Firstly, how could a rail system cause a malfunction in your weapon? There were alot of Acogs being used overthere as well and I can tell you once zeroed, they shoot to point of aim. No charges or extras were issued by me or to my troops. Mods to weapons that are permanent are what is not allowed. Add on parts are just that, add ons. By the way I am in the reg force and of high enough rank to set the example to my followers.
Personally over my 2 tours I ran the following:
- Eotechs (issued and my own)
- Short Dot in a Larue mount
- Aimpoints in various mounts
- Troy BUIS
- Larue BUIS
- PRI Gasbuster cocking handle
- Vltor, Magpul and LMT stocks
- Magpul MAID grips
- KAC, Samson, DD rails
- All types of rail covers
- Surefire lights of various designs
- Redimags
- Pmags and mags with Magpul internals
- BFG slings
- Harris bipods
I have run all kinds of parts on my pers weapon. Once they were attached and zeroed, I trusted them to do what they were designed to do. Our failures at getting parts that work need to be addressed at a higher level. That pos Cadex grip and bolt on rail are junk. Not to mention the triad rail. Buy a quality rail system like KAC or even DD or MI. Put a decent front grip like TD on it and way you go. The pistol grips are garbage too. Those that have carried their weapons in the shoulder for hours on end know that little nub on the grip is annoying, not to mention the gap in the trigger guard. With this, the cheap stock that was added should have been something more useful. A place to store batteries and a better cheekweld should have been considered. Optics were personal choice for us, but knowing that you could ID targets at distance and then engage them accurately was a blessing. The C79 has all kinds of issues, which have been discussed here at length.
In the end, those of us who "modified" their weapons did it to enhance performance and maximize reliability.
Don't talk about what you may know until you have walked a few klicks in my unissued Oakley desert boots through Pashmul.
And with that, YMMV.

Vickers sling ( Combat application sling, CB)
Rail Hand guards
Magpuls ( They will save your life)
Weapons lights are issued as are PAQ 2-4 (depending on rank and role)
Eotech are issued ( even for C7 not just C8)
His CofC may have “issues” win non issued sights
Tactical tailor 2 peace MAV w/ harness or SOTECH equivalent
3x3 Mag shingles, bungee type ( for 9 mags)
Tango down for grip

Most of the issued stuff is SH!T
Pashmul can be fun place, I miss it :ar15:

How about a note from a doctor or priest saying he is going to sit this one out?? :)
I highly doubt anything in the world would get him to sit this one out.

I was hoping Kevin and Hoddie would chime in on this. Thanks for the input guys. Do you recommend the old style Mag-puls or Ranger Plates? I'm a big fan of Ranger Plates myself.

Talked with my buddy, sound like he will more than likely be issued the C8 with 203. He says his unit is pretty lax and "anything goes".

A spare bolt and small parts kit. The dust is like talc and small parts get dropped and knocked into it when you are out for weeks on end.

As for it being wrong and against the rules, I DON'T CARE most of the rules are stupid.

If he is carrying a C8 and M203 he will need a carbine RAS that the bottom half can be removed and still provide side rails for his weapon light. He needs to put the light on one side and his PAQ 4c or PEQ 2a on top where it is protected by the front sight hood the way God intended it. Also because our M2o3 sight takes up the real estate on one side.
I recomend the 2 point Blue force vickers over a single now for versatility although I used a wilderness single last tour. I am now a Vickers convert. (I lived with KevB for years) If he can get PRI gasbuster charging handle he should. I used an aimpoint M68 on top a KAC RAS2 last time and missed the magnification although it was great in town. Next time my ACOG instead. I used the cheap magpulls last time. My weapon is the one in my avatar.

When the chain of command was nervous about our "add ons" in pre training we had a sympathetic gun plumber look our wpns over and okay anything that didn't "affect the safe operation" of it. Ie no match triggers or internal mods. Also they didn't like us removing the slip ring for freefloat RAS's
