ATC hate

Because it's more hoops to jump through and some people don't feel like bothering.

QFT

If I can legally carry a rifle or shotgun in that location then there is no reason I shouldn't be able to carry a handgun as well.

Carrying a handgun in the bush shouldn't require a permission slip.
Carrying a handgun ANYWHERE shouldn't require a permission slip. 🤷‍♂️

Handgun really isn't enough grizzly deterrent.
The statistics say otherwise.

The problem most people have is that they think a firearm must be able to kill a bear to successfully prevent an attack. That is completely wrong. A firearm need only be able to dissuade the bear from attacking or continuing to attack and there are loads of cases where a 9mm handgun did exactly that. My suspicion is that the noise coupled with a pain stimulus is enough to dissuade most bears.

The one guy mentioned that he was the person responsible for dealing with ATC requests for animal protection and he said there was a course required that included shooting with the handgun you plan to carry and you had to be proficient with it in order to pass and get the ATC. He specifically said that he felt responsible for the safety of people that carry and wouldn't let people make their own decisions about their safety. He absolutely believed that people shouldn't be allowed to make their own choices and that he knew better.
Govt in a nutshell.

Timothy Treadwell says "ANY handgun is better than a frypan.".......................

Get an antique revolver in 44 Russian. You can make up loads with 240 gr LSWC going 850 FPS using Unique. I did. Yes it's legal
Yes it is.....:)

However the revolver will come with a Freedom Tax to the tune of $4000.00. I've seen Colt Antique Revolvers at a $20,000.00 asking price.....:(

Not for this cowboy, sorry!.........:(

I picked up my Reichsrevolver 1882 for under $3k. Buy in person and use cash for a slightly better discount. Here is a nice one https://store.theshootingcentre.com/erfurt-antique-m1883-reichsrevolver-10-6mm-4-6-barrel-ser-5793g/ They fit nicely in a S&W L frame 5" barrel holster. I do NOT work for these guys and get nothing from my suggestion. Dies are online and I use Starline brass from Budget Shooters. Ensure you get a separate roll crimp die

I like CSC, and I shop there a lot.....:)

However they should be ashamed of themselves for asking $2800.00 for an old firearm that is probably worth $100.00.

It's only our corrupt and tyrannical Liberal Government who has inadvertently created this antique loop-hole where folks figure these old guns are now worth a small fortune.

CSC and the people selling these things have played right into the hands of the idiotic Liberal mind set......:(

In jurisdictions where saner laws prevail antique handguns are valued for their... antique value. They have significant historical interest and a dollar value assigned which matches that interest. Nowhere on earth do they sell for $100. Accusing people of playing into a "Liberal mindset" by purchasing, selling, and using legally owned firearms is one of the stupidest things I've seen you puke out in Bold onto this forum.

Agreed. I would absolutely not buy that.
Except about the price. If foolish people will pay that much for it, it is not the store's fault. Willing buyers define that price as fair.

I wouldn't blame the store at all. It is a strange mindset for buyers of these "antiques".
Some get off on thinking they have found an exciting way to pay big money and carry a "gun" with questionable mechanical reliability legally.
Yet if they need to try and use it the police and injustice system will shaft them anyway, regardless of the gun's legal status.

Personally, if I felt the need to go armed with hands free carry, it would be far more efficient to either cut down a suitable rifle, or just buy a modern handgun on the black market for similar money. In both moral and practical terms, this would be much better solution.

I don't. How much proficiency is enough? Who decides that? This just gives the government an easy way to exclude people. It's dangerous to give the government any tool to deny people firearms.

People don't shoot wildlife in self defense in populated areas, it is in wilderness areas where there is far less danger of someone being hit by a stray round, which makes the proficiency question far less important than in heavily populated urban areas.

Most of the people establishing the requirements have zero experience with handguns to establish the protocols. RCMP officers who qualify annually become authorities on what’s required? The so called “experts” aren’t actually experts by any objective measure. I’ve put hundreds of thousands of round into targets with a pistol, in training and competition, and most by most government measures, I wouldn’t be consdidered an “expert” because I didn’t carry one as an LEO.

Just because you carry a radio on you belt doesn’t make you an expert in signals or communications - any more than carrying a pistol makes you an expert on it’s use.

All that aside, I spend a couple of day with a guy who had zero experience with a rifle who what going on an African safari with a bunch of rich friends. I showed him the different shooting positions, how to drop into prone, shoot kneeling, squatting, and the proper use of a rifle sling.

In Africa, you have undergo a “hunt test” to demonstrate your shooting skills before they will “qualify” you to hunt. The dude put 2 rounds into a target at 100m in a 2 cm group. They told him “you’re qualified.” (Even though he #####ed at me because I wanted him drop into a prone position because he was getting “sore” with the number of repetitions to get “good”)

The “authorities” making the rules have no practical experience or qualifications to make the rules for obtaining a ATC, IMHO.

Agree ++++. The so called "authorities" carry guns but they are NOT experts. This whole shebang of ATC is a monumental swindle - a Sting !

RCMP officers don't get to decide if you get an ATC. Civilain CFO's do.

Bean counters.

My buddy department, someone thought it be great idea to purchase Bushnell TRS 125s... 100$ optic, for their C8 issed rifles.

Look at the crap gear the CAF gets. Vest that holds 4 mags. But get issued 10 in theater.

i have heard about the testing and evaluation a person has to do in order to get a Wilderness ATC in Alberta and how they will not issue one if you are not proficient with your pistol or not carrying a pistol they deem to be appropriate.
I've always wondered if you fail to get your ATC.... are you suppose to use a finger gun to get the bear off you?
my thoughts have always been if the bear is coming in hot from a distance i'm using my rifle.
if the bear is on top of me gnawing on my scull i'm gonna use a pistol and bury it into him and unload.
why do i need to show my proficiency in burying a pistol into something and pulling the trigger as many times as i can before i pass out?
isn't having something better than nothing?
I heard of another Paramedic who last fall was out hunting and had his rifle on him when he was mauled and had to be air lifted to hospital.
from what i understand he was unable to get his rifle up before the bear was on him.
his hunting buddy had to shoot it.
if he didn't have a buddy with him he would have died, 100% as it was he got critically injured.
