ATRS actions

- At this point does ATRS have a WORKING action of their own make/manufacture with the above features mentoned (prototype or other wise)

- The road to full production and success is long and fraught with pitfalls. In your own conservative estimations where are you in this process.

- Based on the above, do you have a conservative estimate as to release to the consuming public.

Please understand, I am not trying to be difficult or stir the pot. I simply want reasonable, reliable information from the source, so I can make some decisions on my part.

Yes this is a photo of a prototype made by Glen Harrison, who founded Nesika.
The actions we will be making will look nearly identical, hence use of the photo, with his permission.

Can I place an action in your hand today? NO.
Do I have the programs all ready to go? Yes Do I have steel in hand and ready to go? Yes
Have we tested the programs and know what will turn out? Yes, with the assistance of a friends CNC machine we have a prototype.
Once final set up of our machines are in place, actions should be available late July early August if all goes as expected.

Excellent!! This is actually going to be a reality and you have answered my questions.

• You have a proto-type, (regardless of who's machine you used)
• You are working towards facilities to build and have material on hand to make them
• The machine programing is nearing completion
• From your comments, once those other items fall into place, it would seem that you are poised to run a few pre-production models on your own equipment to double check and perfect the process
• With actual product to hit market for August 2008, baring an attack or attacks of Murphies Law

Excellent!! One of the most exciting developments in recent memory in the Canadian Firearms community.

I look forward to seeing actual models and range reports in the not to distant future.

Congratulations to ATRS and the rest of us as well.

Just to give you guys an update, we got our panel with the motors and converters to wire in prior to the arrival of the CNC. Most of the wiring is done and in place. We still have to shuffle some machinery around to give the new machine a place to go but it's coming along. I look forward to downloading the first program into it and seeing chips fly.
 
what type of program are you guy using, it is G-code or conversational? for the machine!

any Hint?
 
As a CNC machinist, I know that there is alot more that having the programs and the way we go. You need to have all the setup info, fixures, tooling, holders, Then post the program to the controller and make sure there is no bugs (there always is). It is a lot of work for a newbe CNC shop.

Yup I was brand new at this, 35 years ago.
I would like to think that after owning and operating a couple machine shops in the past and having already been building actions for a few years I can handle it. Just because the machine is new doesn't mean I am.
 
Well, there seems to be a lot of Yes, No, Maybe so, from both camps on this.

We could discuss add-in-fan-item Mabye one SHOULD, or maybe One SHOULD NOT dance with the devil in the pale moon light.

However at the end of the day, the proof will be in the pudding.

In this case the pudding is the action in quesiton, and Im thinking with the caliber of shooters we have on this board (no pun intended :D) we will know not to long after they come out, how good these actions really are.

So how about at this point we give ATRS some room, and leave the rest of this posts for updates on real progress.

It is my sincer hopes this truly turns out to be what many of us have been looking for, for quite some time. However reality has been known to be a cruel misterss at times.

It is Easy to copy some body else creation, but difficult to come up your own!

We're talking about a simple bolt action here, not some super duper complex compnent design here. Sure, I'm positive there'd be a decent amount of work to do this kind of thing but c'mon....the wheel has already been invented.

exactly.... frankly most custom actions are just remakes of commercially available units but made to tighter tolerances and better metalurgy.... maybe with a tweak here or there and maybe a gee whiz modification.

I firmly believe atrs will have an action out by xmas ;)
 
Guys, both of your views are bang on. I've watched as fabricators like Chip Foose has created things that no one has ever seen before and won awards for his work. A good friend of ours is a fabricator and does primarily vehicle stuff but he's agreed to help get this ball rolling with advice on the proper tooling and fixtures, so since we're not alone in this world, why try to be. I want saleable fuctioning finished products ASAP, so that's what I'm going to push for. As far as cost of an action, I'll do everything possible to keep the price down and still be able to make a go of it.

The whole point of not doing as Gunboy wants, a completely new and proprietary design, was to ensure that we are not reinventing the wheel. The supply of triggers and some other parts will be exactly the same as they are for Remington 700s. 100% interchangeability. Barrels should always be threaded and fitted to any action on an individual basis, so this will not be an issue either.
Due to the increased action diameter and length of tenon, the stocks will be slightly limited, McMillan has a copy of our prototype and Manners will soon.
A friend of mine has set up a pantograph to do laminated stocks so he will be able to supply them as well. I suspect Joel Russo will also be able to supply stocks.
With a little reworking, opening up the action area and recutting the lug inlet, an HS or B&C could be modified.
HS and B&C do not want to get involved sheerly for the small number of stocks involved. I have not bothered with any of the tupperware stock makers for obvious reasons.

I would take a comment like this to mean you feel I should spend a ton of time and effort creating something wholly new and unproven. Which I have no plans of doing.
There are many companies that have tried to create some propreitary equipment, but when they fail to remain in business leaves the consumer in the lurch. that is not how I conduct business.
