Non restricted can be "lent" to a friend and don't require an ATT which is the crux of this problem. As long as they're non-restricted you can transport them anywhere... it's the whole having an ATT to transport them from somewhere to somewhere that is causing the problem.
I still think a safe with a clear explanation of required storage for restricted firearms is the way to go. Mine was concerned about firearms in the house as well - but I'm getting a safe - and after discussions about it - I have clearance for as many as will fit in said safe.
