ATT's what you need to know

I have heard that there is a bill in the process right now that will make it so you do not need an ATT anymore..... is there any truth to this or is it just wishfull thinking??

I see you just joined, welcome. Should Bill C-301 be passed, ATTs will become an implicit part of your RPAL. Read up on the bill and be sure to write a letter to your MP requesting his support. Best case scenario, the bill passes into law sometime in the middle of this year.

Bc - latt

Hey all.

I just applied over the phone to get my LATT today in BC (March 2nd 2009). Apparently, the province of BC is doing a pilot project where you can apply to get your LATT over the phone. All you need to do is give them proof of membership of a BC range. I was told that I can fax, e-mail, or snail mail them proof of membership. I e-mailed it to them and now my LATT is already out in the mail... the same day I applied!

I contacted the Surrey CFC (via 1-800-731-4000) and they made this happen. :D

It's the same process in SK.

new brunswick

1. write your test and pass.
2. send in your rpal application and test results.
3. wait to you see that your application is starting to be processed, Than to speed things along call them and ask if they would like your references to call them and if they could do your interview now, or wait for them to call you and your references.
4. receive your license in the mail and order your gun.
5. Send in your Att application with sections a, c, and f filled out only and a copy of your range membership card. You can also fax this in and mine was completed within the hour.

CFO told me that if the firearm was sent to the post office that I would need a temp att to bring it home. I asked her what if I don't know what it is because I had ordered other parcels to and she told me that I should then get a temp att for any parcels coming from the place of order just in case. With this, keep in mind a lot of gunnuts say don't open it and just take it home.
Hope this helps. The whole process took approx 5 weeks from 1 to 5 for me.

I did the same a couple of days ago (March 18th-ish), I did not even know my PAL number (it was issued but has not arrived yet) they had no problem looking it up. However a friend of mine called to do the same the next day and he was told that they cannot do it over the phone. I was told it would take 1-2 weeks for my LATT to arrive.

Short update on ATT process in La Belle Province....

I got my RPAL in late January, but only received club membership on March 18 (CRAFM). Passed mandatory safety course week later, on the 25th, and bought a handgun on the 31st.
BTW, it was a CZ Shadow I bought brand new at the club. I could have saved probably a couple of hundred bucks by buying off EE, but I figured the transfer and ATT would be easier and faster. Besides, I generally like to buy locally and CRAFM crew seems like a good bunch.
As I bought it late at night, I only got the reference number on Thursday, April 2nd. I immediately sent the filled out ATT aplication (provided by CRAFM at the time of purchase) to CFO on Parthenais in Montreal, it was received next morning, April 3rd. The following Monday, April 6th, I got a letter from CFO, dated April 2nd, asking me to send ATT application (the CFO sent the letter the day before I sent the application, as a result of ownership transfer request from CRAFM). Just to clarify, I called the CFO and found out all the required paperwork was in order.
Only at that time my wife was called, on April 6th. None of my other references was called ever.
LATT (valid till my club membership expires, March 17th 2010) and temporary registration as well as one-time ATT (to take gun from CRAFM to my place) were issued on April 8th and received on April 14th. All in all, not bad at all, considering it was Easter and no mail delivery on Friday and Monday. Quite frankly, I was pleasantly surprised, as I expected longer wait.

Quebec - Update due to new law

For new owner
1) Get non-restricted firearms course + exam
2) Get restricted firearm course + exam
3) Wait for answer

4) Register for the PAL/RPAL. Have it signed by 2 reference (other than wife/husban) + Wife/Husband + All other past wife/husband from the last 2 years
5) Send and wait. 45 days for first one. Faster after

6) Get a range membership
7) Take security course of the range
8) Take security course + exam for law #9
9) Buy a restricted

10) Wait for a call. They should ask you to send proof of range membership by snail mail
11) Wait fir the SATT to get your gun. Bring it home.
12) Request a ATT for all restricted for the range you are member off. Wait 3 weeks.
13) Go shooting.
Should take aroud 5 monts from beginning.

For actual gun owner
1) Be sure to have a range membership
2) Fill in everything in the ATT request form
3) Make copy of the member card + law #9 success course
4) Send everything by snail mail.

Notes
1) In Quebec, ATT MUST be send by mail. They request ORIGINAL of your signature.
2) A ATT is good only for the Range your are member off.
3) You need an official invitation to get a SATT for a competition, etc.
4) When asking for the PAL/RPAL the first time, they request to have a form completed by a policeman. The policeman should post to permit request.
5) Starting september 2009, law #9 course+exam are required to be member of a range.
6) To be identified as a collector, you must pass an exam. And they sometime try to "forget" you are a collector and force you to become member of a range.

Good luck!

1. Take restricted firearms course.
2. Join a club (this is not a requirement in Alberta, and is an optional step)
3. Buy a Handgun or Black Rifle, or one of each, and 20,000 rounds of ammo, you will be issued an ATT to take it home (temporary).
4. Call the CFC at 1-800-731-4000 and tell them you would like a long term ATT with the following conditions attached:

a: You want to be able to transport firearms to all approved ranges all over Western Canada, including the Territories. (BC,AB,SK,MB,YK,NWT,NVT)
b: You want it for 5 years, or until the expiry date of your PAL
c: You want to be able to transport all legally posessed firearms, which means you can borrow them from friends and family provided you have the registration certificate
d: You want it good 24/7 and good for all Border Crossing into the USA

5. Go redneck go!!!!!!!!! You are now armed with the most important piece of paper concering your precious few firearms freedoms!!
6. Attempt to get an Authorization To Carry permit for when you are in the wilderness. Let us know how you make out!!

I'm pretty sure you do have to join a club. I just bought a pistol on Friday and every shop I spoke with as well as the lady at the CFO said I need to belong to a club.

Same ATT different gun?

You do not need to belong to a club to buy a restricted firearm. The CFC will ask you which club you will be shooting the firearm at. You may choose at this point to say that you are a collector (not a good thing) or that you are thinking of joining ###X club. In reality, it is best that you have already joined a club before you decide to own restricted firearms.

Steps to take:

1. Make sure you have your restricted qualification first. If not, then take the course and write or challenge the exam.

2. Join a firearm club/range. In Ontario, they will eventually send in the ATT application for you.

3. Buy a restricted firearm. The CFO will give you a TATT (temporary authority to transport). Now you can take that restricted firearm home. Note: You can only transport it directly home, after which the TATT will be of no use again. You will want to own a restricted firearm at this point in time because the club may need a restricted firearm serial # when they apply for an ATT for you. You need a restricted firearm to apply for an ATT or else the CFO will not issue one.

4. Take a club approved handgun safety course.

5. Hand in your successful marking of the exam or a letter stating that you have passed the course to your secretary of your club as well as your firearm serial number. Note: Other clubs do not require your firearm serial number. Ask exactly what they need from you. Also ask for the greatest time limit and distance you can have on your ATT.

6. After the club receives your ATT back, you will then be called in to take an orientation of the club you belong to. At this time, you will be handed your ATT.

Your ATT is good for only exactly what it states. Read it carefully.

This process took me about 5 months from beginning to end (Oct. 2005/Feb. 2006).
Any finer points that I may have overlooked, please send me a PM.

Two pointers thanks to Bushwacker

Your Ontario ATT is good for transportation to any Ontario CFO approved range in the province.

Upon the ATT expiry date, your club may opt to apply for ATTs for up to 5 years duration (up from previous maximum of 3). Some ranges still apply annually.

Hey there, thanks for the explanation, it really helps. But I am wondering if you have to get a separate ATT for every gun you purchase, or will 1 ATT do for multiple handguns.

Thanks again for guiding a newbie like me away from federal offenses due to my lack of knowledge :D.

Have ATT ... but no Registration Cert

I have an ATT....but the Registration certificate hasn't come in the mail yet.... am I allowewd to take the firearm to the range?

Thanks

Didn't you get a "transfer notification" when you picked up the gun from the store? (assuming store bought locally) That notice was good enough to get the gun home, right?

Carry that notice and the ATT and go shotting!

Ihave been told that in Sask you DO need to be a member of a club with a restricted certified range unless you have "collector status".

Also, I asked if I could get a temporary ATT to carry in the wilderness for bear protection and I was told in no uncertain terms; NO!

Also, Just got my handgun in the mail. I have a PO box so i had to pick it up. I didn't know exactly what to do so I called my CFO and this is what i was told:

1) once you know for sure that your gun is at the post offfice call your CFO for a temporary permit.
2) You will need your post office's STREET address.
3) they will fax it to you so you also need access to a fax machine.
4) once you've picked up your fax, return to the post office and pick up your fire arm.
5) go directly home.

Again this is all in Sask. and I have done all of this in the last week or 2. Hope this info can help some folks out there.

I'm in BC.

I have my restricted license, but do not have any registered handguns yet. Just rifles.

I'd like to get a blanket ATT for BC, but I'm also looking for a ATC for when I'm in the bush (I'm out there in the deep woods weekly, though it isn't for work)

Just for protection, a rifle isn't always practical to carry around I've discovered.

Do I have to register a handgun before applying for a ATT?

Is getting a ATC for the wilderness even possible?

Does this still apply? http://www.1ofthefew.com/ftp/LongTermATT.pdf

Thanks! I read half way through this thread before my eyes started to bleed, I apologize if I missed it (I even tried the search)

Manitoba

1) They will not give you your RPAL number over the phone at CFC or at the CFOs office, you have to wait for it in the mail. So, no go joining the gun club before you have it.

2) short term ATT to drive gun home from store or post office, this is good for hours not all day. I was told that they are very strict about what time you pick up the firearm and the time allotment will depend on distance you have to travel. The short term ATT may only be good for as little as 1 hour. They can issue these same day.

3) long term ATT, fax them a copy of your gun club membership with your RPAL number written on it. Fax 204 984-0670.. to talk to the CFO office its 1800 731 4000 ext 8002. They will process it and you will have to wait for the original copy to arrive in the mail.. minimum wait time 1 week (or time it takes in the mail)

4) Just a note.. I sent my application for the RPAL away March 27, it has been approved and I will have the license in hand in another 1-2 weeks it takes Canada Post to get it here. 1 week, to get the range membership, another 1 week for the long term ATT.. and we are at 100 days from the day I took the course to the day I can actually fire a gun.. Fu**ing rediculous.
