Here is part of an article that just appeared in a local paper, regarding ATVs.

I don't understand why someone would intentionally abuse the crap out of a $10,000 ATV...is that supposed to be fun?

Sure, I've been in some bad-a$$ places (swamps), and gotten stuck...but I was not there for sh!ts and giggles. ;)

Habitat destruction is a huge problem in some areas. Mindless morons rip through wet sites with their ATVs with reckless abandon in a never ending pursuit of mud bogging. We must try to educate these people as to the negative impact on the environment and the brush all ATV enthusiasts get painted with.

I fail to see any problem with the picture at all . I do see three or four people accessing a trail on there quads and probably having a good time. There is no destruction on that trail, there is no sensitive riparian vegetation on that trail to rip up and destroy.

It looks like the moderators, for some reason, removed the story.
It was a copy in the paper of how authorities made a crackdown on stupid operation of quads in southern BC.
Here is nitty gritty.
" (Paraphrased) 500 people were recently checked between the US border and Falkland--
Majority were responsible riders----
Authorities, (Forestry, envireonment officers, RCMP) issued 28 violation tickets, 20 warnings, one arrest, three 24 hour roadside suspensions, three vehicle inspections and one firearm seized.
They mention fines of $575.
It didn''t say so, but this is the fine for a vehicle without third party liability insurance.
Maybe the mods will say what they did with the story.

Sorry, sorry, mods. It looks like it was my mistake, I deleted the original from Photobucket, and that removed the article.
Here it is again.

I saw yesterday, for the first time, a new sign warning me to stay on the established roads and trails or face big fines and jail time. This on a road leading into, yes you guessed it - an active logging area! Go figure!

Found out something about posting pictures. If you post a picture with Photobucket, then later delete it from Photobucket, it also deletes it from your former posting!
This is what happened, why the picture went. It was originally posted, but I thought I had no further need for it on Photobucket, so I deleted it, and away went everything.

I don't think the active logging area has anything to do with it.
They are trying to prevent stupid ATV operators from ripping up the envirenment.
If they are successful, we will be able to continue to operate on public land.
If the authorities fail, in their endeaver to control stupid operators, we will all lose the privelege of operating our ATVs on public land.
With the proper liability insurance, which most of us carry, we are pefectly legal in operating on logging roads, active or not. However, common sense dictates that we do not use the logging roads at the same time that trucks are using them.

There is a difference there. They cause surface damage but they should be scarifying the area after they are done and fixing it as best they can.

This type of ATV fan make all the rest of us look bad just like poachers taint hunting. They are 15 years late clamping down on this in Alberta and now they have to shut areas down completely.

I go out and rip up the muskeg all the time. So does almost everyone I know. Some places it is ok to do it, like out in the middle of no where where it disturbs no one and environmental impact is non existent.

Other places it is not ok to do it, like around the areas the urbanites go to see "nature" or where there is REAL environmental impact, be it a sensitive area or impact due to the high numbers of ATVs.

We have the same problem here but with the ATV's and 4x4 vehicles going into planted farm fields, makes for good hunter farmer relations?
