August purchase

Hi fugawi,

I posted information and pictures of her on Gunboards, some guys there are stumped as to the "T" on the receiver as well.

Is that AV1 depot marking the one right right under the "D" stamp ? If so, it does appear on the receiver as well as a smaller stamp below the stock line near the left side rear bridge.

Oh, I also have to make a correction to my previous post, the "SA" stamp on the right side of the butt stock is actually branded on, not ink stamped on. I haven't seen a stamp like this on the butt stock before so I was taken aback when I first noticed it. Any thoughts here ?

That is alright, it seems any information on the "P" series rifles is quite generalized as they only re-lined and marked very few of them. I think the estimated total number was ~ 13,000 for M91 style rifles but when you factor in the winter war, continuation war, and normal service life, how many are left I wonder for comparison ? Once you add the different Finnish marking and assembly flare into the mix, each and every rifle is different.

This seems to be the case on Gunboards as my request for additional information has fallen silent.

I remember seeing a "P" series rifle being sold on the EE, if the present owner wishes to compare his/her rifle, I'm all for it. Who knows, we may make some new discoveries ?

Enfield No. 7 Mk l bayonet and scabbard

Been buying a few bayonets lately. Don't like my milsurp rifles to feel naked! ;)

This is a Poole made, Enfield No. 7 Mk l/L bayonet designed to be used on the Lee Enfield rifle, the Sten SMG and the Sterling Pachett SMG. It has a rotating bayonet pommel and the handles are made with a resin impregnated cloth composite called Paxolin (another bayonet collector calls it Tufnol).

Worldbayonets.com indicates that 176,000 N0.7 MK1/L bayonets were manufactured from 1944 to 1948. Of those only 30,000 were made by Poole.

Its a wicked looking knife bayonet and the blade is sharp. It was designed to be both a bayonet and a fighting knife This is a really interesting bayonet - it has that gadget appeal but is a solid bayonet.

Its marked No. 7 Mk l/L on the left ricasso with 1946 and a P in a small circle on the right. It also has a small arrow on the pommel with an inverted 7.

A Commonwealth bayonet collector from the RSA informed me that these were used for ceremonial purposes by Guards regiments with the No. 4 rifle. However a well known Canadian dealer has one in a cut down Australian scabbard and speculation on the Australian Blade Forum suggests that they may have been used by the RAF at a joint RAF/RAAF/RNZAF airbase at Butterworth, Malaya in the 50s.

There are all kinds of stories circulating about the No7 bayonets. I have one of those Aussie No7s with the cut down no1 scabbard, painted olive drab. They also have two different colored grips. Black and Red, both are resin.

There are stories, such as yours and others, like special squads or regiments, MPs etc, carried the black gripped model. Who knows, it may have been done in the interest of uniformity on the parade ground or some commander wanted all of the MPs to look the same. Come to think of it, I don't recall seeing an MP ever carrying a bayonet. Maybe, under certain conditions they do?

Anyway, that No7 is in very nice shape. They seem to range from junk to excellent. One thing, they certainly aren't common items at gun shows. When you do see them, they run anywhere from $100/good to $250 excellent with scabbard and frog.

Nice find

Yes that the AV1 stamp on the receiver - its very stylized looking. I have also seen them on the right butt stock.

Congrats on your find - that's a truly amazing acquisition, especially when I bet you got it for a song. You might also want to post your question on the 7.62x54R.net forum if you don't get a heads up on GB. Give some time for Vic, Jarkko, kh and some of the other regulars to notice though. You could pm them too.

I wonder what the Finnish word for 'test' is.... :p

Panshin Bayonet for the M91 Dragoon

Picked up this Panshin bayonet for the M91 Dragoon rifle from a Canadian dealer. It is in very good condition and has a serial number on the bottom of the bayonet shank when placed on the M91 rifle. I have read that serial number placement can indicate who the manufacturer is. I believe this to be a Izhevsk as the seems to be a faint arrow in a triangle barely visible near the left side of the second photo.

Other stamps were a 'P', broken '<', a 'k' but not quite complete, oval with a vertical line slightly angled from left to right, stylized 'n' in a circle and stylized 'A' in a circle. I know that these are Cyrillic letters not Roman - hopefully you will recognize what I mean.

Now to find a M91 Dragoon to go with my bayonet.

P.S. What are people using to store and load their photos? Photobucket is such a PITA - I'm trying to resize my pics and its soooooo slow that it makes me want to slit my wrists with my No. 7 bayonet

Update: I gave up on F'ingBucket and now use Imgur. It has a very fast editor and is quick to upload. Thanks to Spetz for recommending it.
