Hello All;

Just wanted to share the awesome time I had getting my first turkey. It was my third time out - the first time, I had a few hens in my decoys, but didn't see the males. Next, I had a tom set up out of range and couldn't get him to commit. Yesterday morning, my buddy and I headed out and got set-up around 4:30 in the .am at the edge of a cornfield. We setup a hen decoy about 30 yds out and then sat down and enjoyed the quiet. At the first hint of light, there was some gobbling in the trees just to our right. What an awesome sound! As daybreak came, the gobbling got a bit more frequent. I then heard the whoosh of the Tom coming down and he landed about 20yds from the decoy. A couple of clucks sent the tom into full strut. I waited until he took a step or 2 and extended his head and then took him. On the way out, we saw 2 whitetail deer watching what we were doing. Couldn't have asked for a better morning. The tom ended up being 20.5lbs with 8" beard and 1 1/8" spurs. To say I was/am excited is an understatement. I am looking forward to going out and trying to fill tag No. 2. Anyways, just wanted to share the pics of this awesome bird. Good luck to all that are heading out for them.

Congrats on the bird, I haven't caught one yet, but I am losing focus with all the handgunning I have been doing lately/ :D

Those flight feathers have value in good numbers, $100 per 100 when cut and gounded base, thats ten birds, For Archers.
Only problem is getting the numbers, but they have an excellent oil line, and hold up great.
Oh sorry , congrats on a beautiful bird!

Congrats on your first bird, your hooked now for sure! Great story, thanks for sharing it with us. It's been a tough season in my area WMU 63A. Got on to toms 3 times but could never get them away from their hens. I'll keep trying.

Congratulations, that is a beautiful bird. Good luck with tag number 2. I am certain that you are now hooked for life. There is nothing like getting a gobbler "talking" to you in the early morning hours. :) I am still trying to get my first bird of the season. :(

Regards,

Chizzy

Awesome. I got out-foxed by a big gobbler yesterday.

I setup early too but had no response until about 7:00AM when I heard a gobble very close to my right. After 3-4 min I hit the call again and just about jumped out of my skin with an ear shattering gobble. That bird must have been right behind the tree I was against.

My started reaction resulted in an explosion of feathers and sound. All I caught was a dark movement to my left behind and the rush of wind from the bird's flight against my face. After that he wasn't coming back. I moved to another spot and played around with 3 hens for 30 min but no bearded birds came in.

4th time the charm this year?

Hi Guys;

Thanks a lot for the congrats, and you're definitely right about being hooked. Hunted various furry, pelted critters over the years, but there's definitely something different and cool about this turkey thing. Going out again in a couple of days and hopefully will have some more luck. If not, I know it will be a great morning anyways. I work with an official scorer, so will enter into the contest for the fun of it.

Good luck to all those still on the chase.
