B.C. mulls return of grizzly hunting in controversial report

He's fighting fire in Fort Smith. When I talked to him yesterday he had bigger fish to fry...like the potential abandonment of their helicopters and equipment and emergency evacuation of firefighting crews.

The situation there is dire, and that's being optimistic.

Is that the NWT fires? Heard it was horrible up there.

It is a proven fact that hunted populations of bears are better off for it.
Harvesting of the mature boars allows for a better overall population balance as more cubs survive to adulthood due to mitigated predation of cubs by those mature boars.
Bears that are hunted have a healthier respect for man and are more prone to keeping their distance from human activity, resulting in fewer bear/human interactions with negative results for both man and beast.
Managing bear populations also has benefits for ungulate prey species, resulting again in a more balanced predator/prey species population.

And for those that suggest that bear viewing is the only better option for economics in the outdoor world, they should look at Alaska that manages both opportunities and produces economic benefits to all parties (viewers and hunters), for a more balanced approach to that issue. And then look at their scientifically managed bear populations for a comparison to ours.

As with anything, when "well meaning" humans interfere with nature, things get thrown out of balance and it takes years to recover.
Left alone, nature may have swings and cycles, but overall there is a balance that is maintained over the long timeframe.

As an advocate of western science and traditional practice, I say leave politics and emotion at the door.
And if the "well meaning' that throw their money at the WWF, PETA and other so called conservation groups that do nothing but build warchests for litigation; I say put your money into true conservation where the dollars actually get to the grounds for projects that actually benefit the environment and the wildlife, and you will reap the benefits you think you are paying for! Join the foundations such as Ducks Unlimited, Wild Sheep Foundation, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Mule Deer Foundation, Wild Turkey Foundation, etc. (forgive me if I do not have all the names correct) and do some real conservation...
or better yet, go hunting and fishing and teach your children the tradition of harvesting game that will feed themselves and others, where people work together for a common cause, instead of fighting each other, thinking they are doing any good.
Build some good memories, and create new, or renew, strong relationships with friends, families and neighbours. Rebuild the foundation this country was built on and honour our ancestors for their efforts and sacrifices.

Yes. Last communication from him was that the fire was expected to reach the town by not too long after midnight on Tuesday the 15th. His last message was that the flight crews had stayed behind when the rest of the firefighters were evacuated. Their plan was to "to try and bucket on the last ditch line tomorrow and hold it". That was at 11PM on Monday night. Now radio silence. Zero visibility, IFR-only helicopters, communications in and out down...it's bad.

This is the last photo that he posted when I was talking to him. That was at 3:30pm on Monday.

excellent post . blackram .

Maybe Chris Genovali, executive director of the Raincoast Conservation Foundation should move to a northern community infested with these bears to see the reality of what is the result of the hunting ban. Might open his eyes and actually understand how many there actually are and what a nuisance they can be.

Thanks BUM just saw this, back from the NWT. We got lucky with the winds, but sounds like my replacement there has got a hard go ahead things are pretty knife edge with the fire that close.

On grizzlies, I suspect any future hunt won’t be recognizable in regards to 2017 and prior. I’d bet it would be heavily indigenous lead, and far more specific rather than draws all over the province.

The Govt needs a face saving way out of the Bear Problem, it'll be under the guise of hunting by those Tribes that consider the Grizzly to be malevolent.

How many bears do you guys think got shot yearly under the LEH out of curiosity? Do you actually believe there are now high numbers in the "north" and only a handful of tags (most unfilled) a year will stop the bearpocalypse?
