I while back Gadget posted a message in the EE that a Heckler & Koch USC could be had at a Ontario gun store for a great price....Well, I never could pass up a good deal, so I bought it. Originally I bought it to flip it, but after firing it, I really liked it...I just HATED the colour...so I surfed the net and USC.com had instructions how to dye it using fabric dye! I could not find the liquid dye the call for and had to settle for the powder kind. After having Brock at Hunter's strip it to the component parts and working up the courage to dunk my rifle in the 160 degree water and dye I had stewing on my gas BBQ...these are the results.

how well does dye hold up on plastic? will it come off on your hands as you hold the grip, maybe if your hands are sweaty or soemthing?

Did you tell your wife you were doing it to match your outfit?

Nice work! Any trouble spots or thin areas???

She has seen me in my Ninja suit...she knows that there is only really one colour in my wardrobe...BLACK!

And no, the dye sublimination is very uniform...I was quite impressed. I wanted to cook it longer than the hour that I did, but I ran out of propane.

The dye becomes part of the plastic...brake clean wont take it off!!!:)

Isn't the USC restricted? Chop that sucker down and thread it!

I think the issue is the fact that the USC never came with a shorter barrel so by cutting it, you would be creating a prohib device. I may be wrong, but I would also have a tough time cutting that fine, heavy, poly rifled piece of German steel. At 50m this thing make one ragged hole, it would be a shame to mess with that. Plus I think I probably hurt any resale value by dyeing it, I wouldn't want to destroy its value completely with a barrel cut. And yes, sadly I am limited to 5 rounds, but if the mag cap law goes out the window, I will convert it to take 32 round greasegun mags.

As for colours, I think the original light grey plastic would take pretty much any colour, but black is safest!:)

It is a really fun rifle to shoot, it has the strangest cycling sound...very sub-gun sounding. The recoil is fairly hefty as the bolt is HUGE. Accuracy is great and I think it will make a fine rifle for Tac Matches.:)

The dye job improved the look 110%. Chopping her down is not gonna mess with your group at 50yds and personally I think it will improve resale, Hell I'll buy it!
