Backpack Hunting

i remember my first back pack outing with out an adult..
me and a buddy were about 14......
we were to go out on a survival trek..
we crossed a lake by boat..then on the other shore we had to walk in about 2 miles to another lake, were we picked for our camp sight..
all,s we had was a tarp and a few cheap sleeping bags..along with fishing supplies and a 410 shot gun..
we had plans of eating like kings out there..
but a few days later we found out what squirrel taste like:eek:
well it was either squirrels or seagull..

Davey.... can you post a list of things you're actually taking on a trip? Like all of them.....

thanks

Packing list are very personalized, and take some serious time to figure out exactly what you need. This is a list of most of the stuff I would take off the top of my head(probably missing some things). I will revise it when I get more time.

-Batteries for headlamp, camera and GPS
-Binos
-Blistex
-Bone saw
-Boots
-Camera
-Water bottle
-Hat
-Cape Salt/ 2 lbs per person
-Compass
-Cooking Pot
-Cup
-Duct tape/ 20 feet wrapped around your water bottle.

-Food/ About 2 lbs. per day. Bring dry foods, rich in calories.
-Gloves
-Game Bags

Thank you Davey. It's a good list.

I'm planning to go alone, so I'll try to figure what exactly I can drop from that list. Spotting scope, is extra... but even alone, I'd keep the toothbrush and change underware

What we are hunting makes a spotting scope a necessity. So even if I was going alone it would be strapped to my pack, could save lots of walking in the end.

I would get rid of the bone saw, you can quater and debone an animal with a knife, unless you have other uses for the saw in mind. just my thoughts.

I have gone without a saw many times, I have also deboned animals without one. It weighs about as much as one freeze dried back pack meal and can save allot of time, plus has many other uses, it stays.

Thanks for the suggestion though...

CD,
i never thought of the duct tape around the water bottle. genius!!!!
on long trips i have gone as far as cutting the handle off the toothbrush.
usually I'll take my suppers out of their packaging and combine into larger ziplocs.

also a couple of garbage bags or pack covers. which ever you prefer. cause water weighs a lot!!!!

Duct tape can fix a tent, sleeping bag, and is the best mole skin out there for blisters as well as so many other uses. My toothbrush is about 2" long :D.

Ziplocs are a backpackers dream, they keep everything dry and organized. I take many things out of thier origional packing and transfer into Ziplocs.

This is scaring me..crazy davey and I are alot alike!!:runaway:

I use the duct tape around water bottle, as well as bring some electric tape.

I love ziplocs

I bring a small folding Sandvick saw which doubles as bone saw and all arounder. It's light and works well...

I take more ammo than 15 rounds, becuase I miss alot.:) Most of it will stay in a "base" camp. Generally I have 12 in my ammo wallet on my belot and 3-4 in the rifle.

I always keep electrical tape wrapped on my small first aid kit as well.

Don't be scared, being crazy isn't all that bad ;) :)

Nice setup Davey. You have some pretty high end gear.

what temp do you use that gear in? I am probably a wuss, but I prefer the sleeping bag to be heavier. Also why my setup doesn't coem in at 45 lbs. lol

Also, what stock do you have on your rifle? Is it just the angle, or did you find a folder that works?

I don't see much by way of attachments on the pack, when you are packing game out, do you put it inside, and leave the top off for air?

Also, what do you do for water? boil and go?(hopefully not literally lol)

I also bring paracord. enough to make an a-frame, or even to wrap around the antlers for a 2 man pull.
