Backpack meals

I bought a bunch for fun to try. Wasn't expecting much.

But I have to admit I was pretty blown away how good some are. Like way better than I expected.

I'm not trying to convince anyone its grandmas home cooked meal, but man it would taste good after a long day in the middle if nowhere.

Surprisingly they are not gross at all. And usually better and fresher tasting than any frozen meal you would ever put in the microwave.

After a full day of hiking and glassing sheep, mountain house is amazing. I bring along butter and throw a chunk in it for extra calories. Interested to hear how the peak refuel is. I don't like the backpackers pantry stuff. MH lasagne and spaghetti are my favorites. Instant ichiban type noodle packs also make for a great snack, especially during a break on a rainy day. And Idahoan instant mash potatoes with fresh meat after a kill cannot be beat. Had that with tenderloins around the fire last year. Maybe the best meal i ever had. One pack of potatoes is light and makes enough for two. Couple bucks at the grocery store.

X2 for MH spaghetti and lasagna. Having said that I just ordered a bunch of peak refuel to try this year. I hear good things. Fingers crossed. Also got some other stuff when I was in New Zealand that I didn’t get to try yet.

×3 for the MH lasagna haha. Could have a tiny bit more taste. But dude, it's good until like 2050 lol.

My go to is protein powder, quick oats and some crushed pecans. Just add water and let soak. Nutritionally you cover all your bases.

Mountain house is good. I also like to make my own breakfasts with quick oats with powder milk, brown sugar and cinnamon. Per bag a portion and ziplock it. Just add boiling water.

No way! We want to spend $10 or $15/meal haha...

They are definitely not necessary. I think the appeal is the moral boost/mood boost you have with the quick easy meals.

I agree, the above is a part of my go to breakfast at work 5 days a week. For dinner I was something tastier.

Never could being myself to buy free dried meals. How do they compare to instant mashed potatoes, lipton sidekicks, canned fish with oil, wasa/ryvita, raisins, granola, corned beef, etc?

Wayyyy better than I expected like I said. Definitely grab one or two for fun. I think you will be surprised.

Something that kind of blew me away too is how the meat tasted like it was just cooked pretty much.

The instant mashed can't be stressed enough. Weighs basically nothing and you can fill up on it. Canned fish is awesome, just adds weight if you are eating it every day. But I often bring a couple kipper snack cans as a treat. I also bring pepperoni sticks. I eat them with my lunch every day. Dip them in the little single serving cheese whiz if you can find them. Protein powder shake with granola cereal for breakfast. Snickers bar at lunch. Pistachios. Powdered Starbucks coffee is second to none. On a two or three night hunt you can go nuts. If its going to be two weeks out of a pack you start counting calories to weight ratios. If I am only doing a night or two I will bring chef boyardee and beer. Why not?

I was thinking on trying making some meals and throwing them on the dehydrator and then just adding water. Anyone ever try this. I've had most of the MH and am a fan. Just looking at other options as they are hard to get in my area without spending a fair bit on them

I'm always afraid to try these packaged meals.
Ichiban and other packaged foods often have preservatives that give me vicious hunt ending migraines
MSG is the worst one but I have to watch what is in some of these foods.
Interested to hear if anyone else prone to food headaches have had any issues with Mountain House. I'd like to try some.

I agree,, food allergies are the worst. PVL is my go to protien shake... loves ,sss, me my chicken and rice..
Alpine air is the brand.. they sell it at the big box stores.
gluten and dairy free.. easy to digest . ..best of all , no headache..

I didn’t think about adding protein powder! That would be really good using a vanilla or chocolate powder with it. I have added almonds and pecans though and it’s really good. I like dried apples or bananas as well adds nice taste and weigh next to nothing.

Mountain house / Alpine. New last year was bannock over the fire. Thanks for the heads up re the instant mash from various posters - I'm going to start bringing that.
