I'm thinking of doing a late season Elk outing this week in AB (got a tag). Going out with my oldest.

While the tag is in my name, and I'll need to do the hunting, I wanted him to take along a just-in-case rifle that won't be overtly good for elk (in case we get a-talkin' to a conservation officer), but that would be OK to plink or for use if we run into uninvited diners.

I had originally planned to buy a PCC in 10mm or 45, but it turns out these are dangerous devices desperately needed in Ukraine (ya can't make this #### up).

The choices I'm looking now at are a Henry Homesteader in 9mm (soon to be banned, I'm sure) or a lever (I'm thinking a Henry as well) in 357 or 44mag or what else?

Of course, I could let my son take either my 6.5swede or "his" 243, but I really wanted not-a-bolt-gun, and preferably not one in a rifle chambering.

What do you suggest?

Best kind is a takedown model with a short brl. The butt stock and action should be around 20” so brl and foreend should be keeped to 20” or less as both pieces be same length. Most backpack length are 20 -24”

I don't mean to be that guy, but I'm pretty sure that in the eyes of the law is illegal. I believe if he's carrying he's considered hunting.
I wouldn't do it. You never know..

Lever in 357 loaded with 38sp. Or an old Winchester 94/22 or similar if you could find one.

Alternatively a nice 20ga, single shot would be excellent.

A 44mag lever gun is a rifle chambering if you’re out during a big game season. 10/22 or savage a22magnum. I like Henry 22lr and 22wmr rifles. If you need more than that a shotgun

Age? Can he handle a shotgun?
Oh yeah. He's 16 and handles a 30-06 well enough, though his usual is a 243.

I have a 12ga. But that would be considered a big game boomstick, if loaded with a slug or 00. What would I load it with for it not to be a big game thingy?

Also, would 9mm be OK?

Even the 9mm?

Crazy.

I guess he could take the 22lr Savage Mk.II... but that's a bit cheesy.

In Ontario birdshot or “heavy game load” like bb or #2. Don’t know if that applies everywhere

The Henry Homesteader 9mm carbine is a nice looking semi-auto. With the wood stock and forearm it doesn't attract as much attention with the Liberal b@g-lickers and or the dirty and corrupt RCMP!........:)

In saying that, it is advertised as "from fence-post to bed-post, what's yours stays yours"! This great USA marketing will no doubt catch the eye of the almighty Hitler (Trudy-Socks), and his band of idiots.

You-Tubers also advertise this firearm as an awesome home defense tool. Oh wait, we can't have Canadians thinking they can defend themselves in Communist Regime Chinada!......:) FFS!

Hopefully we become a little more free with Pierre Poilievre at the helm next year. After that, if the Conservatives do not hold onto power, I'm all for joining the USA. This of course with Republicans in power, not the dreaded Demoncrats!.......:) Who will also take away your guns.

I love a lever gun in .357mag/.38spl. My choice (though I understand it wouldn't be possible with your short time frame) would be a Henry mares leg with a full stock.

Pretty sure in Ab you can go for a walk in the bush anytime with a rifle. I do. All year long. Doesn’t matter if it’s hunting season or not. Run into a hungry cougar or wolf and a boy has to protect himself. Give him the biggest gun he likes to shoot.

Well.. he has been asking about a 300 win mag :)

I would check your prov hunting regs and see if there’s any definition of what “hunting” is and see if the regs allow this scenario, that is if you’re concerned about crossing paths with a CO.

In BC it’s pretty well laid out

You can carry a rifle or shotgun on crown land any time of year in Alberta , and there are lots of coyotes and wolves shotcat this time of year anyway .
As long as you have a Wildlife certificate it's not an issue.

Could argue he’s not hunting, he’s just “chasing, pursuing or following after” his dad.
Which is considered hunting, at least in BC. In the end it’s going to come down to what type of CO you encounter. How they interpret the regs will be the thing, they could say the kid is hunting just by being with his dad who is actively hunting. Or they could say he’s just out along for the ride.

Point is, read your regs and see what the actual regs say, don’t just ask online for an opinion. Go from there
