Bad batch of Lapua brass

What do you think about my brass? I bought a box of 100 today. Is it normal?

There is a vertical crease in the neck. This is not normal. Could result in premature cracked neck.

If the brass in the picture came out of the factory packaging looking like that it should be returned. If the scratching came from sizing dies you need to polish dies with Scotch-Brite pad. Some of the recent batches of Lapua brass I've used haven't been cleaned properly and have an oxide scale coating from the annealing process. This scale is easily removed by tumbling or polishing with Scotch-Brite. Since purchasing an annealing machine I've been able to make the same type of scale on any brand of brass.

If the brass is scratched below the annealed area....from just below the shoulder to the case mouth..... then I wouldn't be too happy, but mine are nice & smooth & bright below this area. I could clean the greyish annealed part, but see no need whatsoever to do this. At least I can see that it has been annealed. I can only speak for myself, but the brass I have is, wthout doubt, the best I have ever seen...bar none! No dents, no scratches, and amazing uniformity throughout the whole batch. I have been loading for about 8 years, and this is my first time with Lapua. I have used Winchester 0r remington in the past and, although I have done ok with these, they don't come near to the quality & uniformity of these Lapua. I'm not sure I could afford the asking price from the dealers, but mine were aquired at a super price, which I couldn't refuse. If money was no object, I wouldn't hesitate to buy this brass again. I repeat, I can only speak for myself, and the brass I have.

If I paid the big money for brass cases and they looked like that, I'd be screaming to high heaven.
I have a feeling that if that scratched up case was head stamped Winchester, Remington or Federal, a whole bunch of respondants would be screaming about the poor quality of it. Instead, it is Lapua, so after some shootings and tumbling, it will look just fine.
I guess that's what it means to be a dyed in the wool Lapua fan.

What about a dyed in the wool M1 Grand fan and all the free discolored ammo they gave us in the military...............

I remember a National Rifleman article years ago about long term corrosion of cases in severe conditions. They left cases and IIRC loaded ammo on the plant roof for years in the elements and whatever crap fell from the smokestacks. For whatever reason, the cases that had been annealled and not tumbled back to bright stood up considerably better than the bright ones.

The colours left on is proof that the last operation done on the case was the final annealling. If you want to load ammo and store it for fifty years you might want to leave it on. I believe that is why so much military ammo is showing its colours; it was probably ordered that way. With Lapua the choice is left to the customer.
