I bought a Nikon P-Spur in Dec and just mounted it on rifle last week.Everything seemed ok. I was thinking of sighting in tomorrow so I took gun out of cabinet and wanted to make sure I was happy with position of sight and it doesn't work

Easy enough to test, plug in a fresh battery and see what happens.

Normally, I'd suggest testing new items closer to the purchase date - just in case you do end up with a defective item.

If your red dot doesn't have an auto-off feature then the battery is likely dead.
Pop a new one in and you will know right away if that is the problem.

Does it have a night vision compatible mode? Wonder if it's set to that and the dot isn't visible?

Put a meter in it, it’s a cr2032, so it should be 3v

Should real 3.1v or better if good, under that it’s pretty much bad

Connectors could have pushed in, so not making contact. Happened with a new RDS I bought. 15rds and it shut off, I assumed it was the battery. Nope. The connectors didn't spring out enough to make positive contact.

But my Shield has no shut down mode, It's on 24/7. Just dims a bit, when not in use. But also has a run time for like 12 months on the battery.

I bought a new battery and seems to work. I read through the manual and in small print it said supplied battery was for operation check. So Nikon basically doesn't supply a proper battery
