Bagged a bear with a cast bullet

Does the powder coat take the place of the lube or gas check?

As stated - yes. My own experience is that it doesn't completely eliminate the need for a Gas Check, but it raises the pressure level at which one is required.

To me, the most interesting part of this was the "aha" or "well duh" moment when it was revealed to me that the way around the garish reds, blues, yellows, and even blacks, is to mix the powder coating for a tame brown.

BTW - nice bear. All hail large caliber, slow(ish) cast flat points!

Impossible! As the internet hunting experts will state, bear and other medium to large NA game can only be taken with extremely large calibre arms, coupled with high-end imported optics firing monolitic, heavy projectiles.

Tongue in cheek, of course. Well done sir. :)

Well, a .45 caliber rifle is large, XS sights are imported, and much higher end that the normal Marlin factory semi-buck-horn and bead, and lead bullets are monolithic, (yes lead bullets are an alloy made up of several different metals, but so is the bullet material used by Barnes and GS Custom), and while my tastes run to .458 bullets that are 120 grs heavier, the 360s make up for it with higher velocities.

That would explain the excellent penetration, very nice indeed.

Tell me you don't actually believe that.

Thanks guys. I had a great hunt and was greatly impressed with the performance of the cast bullet. It's a good feeling taking an animal with lead you melted down to make bullets and then reloading them.

Can't wait to get home and try for another one.
