Ballistic Vest - on the range?

Ballistic vest is just like any other safety equipment. You don't need it until you do. I don't think we should frown upon people wearing personal protective equipment.

I have two fire extinguishers in my house and in my numerous decades of life, have never had a fire. It seems to be prudent to have the tools on hand before you need them.

I have no issues with wearing a vest if you think you may need it like I think supressors should be legal. However the guy I'm talking about has all of the same things from boots to hat that a swat member would have as well as the same firearms. That's just a little creepy to me.

Unless you are active military member I believe the term citizen also applies to cops, and why in the world do we need to limit who can buy body amour, that's just absurd!

BC allows those with Firearm Acquisition Licenses to own them. The reason for the restriction is the gang bangers were wearing them in the lower Mainland. I would assume the Gov't decided if you pass the background checks for a firearms license chances are you are not involved in the drug business and may have a need for body armour.

If you are a cop you wear whatever the department gives you to wear while on duty. If you want to own body armour for personal use get a firearms license and fill your boots. Otherwise suck it up. The rules apply to everyone the same.

I don't think the limitation is absurd as you suggest. The drug boys want to shoot it out I don't see why we should allow them a method of protecting themselves and apparently neither did our legislative body here in BC

Refeerman I agree and would add a bit childish as well. Reminds me of the guy at the Remembrance Day ceremonies in Ottawa who dressed up like a Sgt. Major and had never served a day.

I know a guy that has been a member at the two big ranges in Calgary. He dresses up will full swat team gear. My guess is he is a want to because i know what he does for a living. But it is hilarious seeing him.

Is he "that guy" who's relatively .....um...ok. I'll say it...Is he that fat guy?

Good on you. I've lived a life of not caring what others think. It's quite nice actually. (I have a hot wife so... lol) but it does become moot when I bring out the .500 smith and Wesson

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to chime in on the subject of wearing body armor at the range and the ranger I go to started enforcing mandatory body armor while shooting at the range, I have been shooting there since before the rule and does not bother me either way. everyone is exceptional safe but better safe then sorry :)

Seriously, if I thought there was more than a remote chance of being shot at my range I would take up darts! Galt pretty much nailed it. I can see dressing up in SWAT dress if you are SWAT. If not, and you are not a LEO of some sort then you are, for want of a better word an idiot. I am not talking about the 3 Gun vest and such folks wear for competition sake.

You wanna play police officer or infantry than join up I am sure the Army and Law Enforcement are always looking for a few good men. I have seen some of the training the RCMP ERT boys go through. Even on my best day I could not have done what is asked of them let alone try to play PPCLI type on a regular basis. Those folks are special people. Glad we have guys and gals who are able to do it and step up to the plate; I am thankful they do, but dressing up in SWAT garb because you work at a gun range....get real.

I kinda thought that too, at one point. But there are guys that dress up as cowboys to shoot Cowboy Action, war re-enactors of pretty much every war, and so on. I've put on my hunting pack and camo clothes to ensure proper rifle mounting while wearing my pack, although I usually just wear whatever at the range. In winter I often wear hunting clothes because they are good outdoor cold weather gear, but that's more about practical than fashion.

I don't care what someone wears, heck wear a clown suit if it turns you on. If they are safe and having fun, that's what is important. I get what you mean though. :)

I've done plenty of shooting wearing plates and a chest rig. It changes the feel of pretty much every movement because your torso is suddenly not bendy anymore. I'm well aware of the look, but it's the only place to get in real practice. I only ever bother when I'm doing action shooting, never when I'm trying to get tiny little groups at a bench. When I'm wandering down to the 300 I have been concerned if there's an idiot back at the firing point that doesn't seem to understand why all the benches have traffic cones that say "CEASE FIRE" on them. When I go to the range with friends, we always leave one guy back to make sure no one shows up and touches off a round with us downrange.

If it was a rifle would it really matter?

All depends on the type of body armour you're wearing, the calibre of and distance between you and the muzzle of the gun that shot you. Plenty of videos of people in the sandbox taking hits on the front plate, getting up and shooting the prick that shot him. On the other hand, plenty of videos of rounds penetrating plates too, but at least they're going much slower before they got to the squishy bits underneath. It's all about luck if you're getting shot I guess.

I guess Canada is still a free country ; if you feel unsafe at your range , then wear body armor ; if you feel safe , then don' t bother.....to each their own I guess . Do a risk assessment , and prepare yourself accordingly .

If I am attending a range where I feel it is a "good idea" to wear body armor I think i would find another range.I totally understand the safety aspect and looking out for your own best interest.Sometimes there are no second chances.

However, some , and I am not saying the OP , can take something and run with it to the extreme , then next thing you know , for the sake of safety, EVERYBODY is required to wear body armor.

Far more firearm related deaths when hunting in this country than ranges , make it mandatory a long with a hunting license?

The , I got swept at the gun store crowd or a customer had a loaded firearm brought in ,so do you wear one for shopping?

Do you need one for the theater or your place or worship as these seem like great hot spots for disgruntled members of society to go on rampages?

Just sayin, if you want to improve your odds. ;)

Personally , I won't be purchasing or wearing any but that is my prerogative and I also don't shoot at the local range, I go to my own spot.Only because there is nobody there and I can do all the testing and target changing I want and at my own pace.Oh, and I don't get swept, the RO is a bit of a #### though. :)

If you want to improve your odds, all the power to ya and commendable that you take to actions to do it.
