Bang for buck?

another noobie thread.

finally after 2 years of having my RPal i am deciding to buy my first handgun. Sadly the budget is a bit tight so i am limiting my budget to a maximum of 800$ but more preferably under 700$. The only handgun experiance i have is with a BHP some 3000 rounds, and my hand fit real nicely around the grip, sadly Atm it is out of budget of me. So the question is whats the best bang for buck i can under 700$ in either 9mm, 40SW or 45acp.

Thanks

PS. i am afraid of Norcs.

Can't go wrong with either a CZ 75b or Glock 17, both in 9mm. They are both well priced, the ammo is less then the larger calibers. They are fun to shoot, good quality and very reliable.

The CZ would be more a long the lines of the BHP, more accurate, has a better grip angle, and would manage recoil better to name a few advantages, but the Glock is more simplistic in design and function plus more reliable.

Buy what fits your hand. Have to fondle and fire to know what works best for YOU.
Ammo is simple math game, 9mm factory is half the cost of 45ACP. Nothing more sad than NO ammo money. Ammo is expensive, be sure you can afford to shot your toy.

Luv the jokers on CGN, major hypocrite to bash Glock fans, then praise the virtues of M&P.

Don't believe all the Glock fans - the Glock is an odd beast - shoot one first, I have 2 friends who like them (not love them) and I personally cannot stand the grip - it's not natural for me personally.

The M&P 9mm is an amazing pistol for the price, very current pistol (new design and parts thought out REALLY well), people are shooting with them competitively and doing really, REALLY well.

...BLAH, BLAH, BLAH ...

Great - here we go <sigh>

You missed the point by not reading (or quoting) everything I said. All too often glock fans will praise the glock to someone & make a sale without the person ever having HELD the glock... and the next thing you know, someone has a new pistol they bought online that they hate the feel of and don't like the grip.

The 'Glock-onda Civic' is a reliable and inexpensive pistol, yes 'Lot's of police services buy millions of them' - but it's not about quality, it's about cost. How many special forces run with the plastic guns ?

To the original poster - again I'll repeat, shoot a glock, shoot the M&P, shoot the SR9, make a list of inexpensive pistols you like the stats/cost/look of & make your decision based on your own feelings, not the bandwagon of [__insert gun maker name here__] fans telling you one thing over another.

Makarov pistol is not a bad choice. I just trim 9mm brass so i only need to buy the bullet, powder and the primer.

the makarov is on the wifes pending approval list same with a tokarev tt33, love the price of those and the history i will buy one almost for sure. But just not as daily shooters

If you want a good pistol at a great price, look into a SAM 1911 in 9mm. Functions perfectly, cheap to feed, all around good gun. And at 450ish, you can add titrium sights, new trigger and hammer, new grips, and give it a trigger job and still be in your budget. Then you can have an excellent functioning 1911 looking how you want it to with a nice light and crisp trigger pull.

If they are built to spec, you should be good to go with parts interchangeability and compatibility with any other built to spec 1911.

I shot one at the range. I quite liked it. It's no sig or NHC, but it felt good.

Also while I'm thinking about it what a good target caliber

Since you said in your first post that money is a little tight there really is only one answer when it comes to center fire.... 9mm. You can shoot more for the same cost as the others or you can shoot the same for less.

Although if you're serious about target shooting then you may want to stop the bus and consider a revolver. A .38Spl revolver will generally shoot tighter groups than a 9mm semi auto. Assuming equal shooter capability that is.

More importantly is to look into the handgun "games" in your area. Standing and perforating paper gets old pretty quickly. It soon becomes a question of what sort of matches you can shoot with your gun to continue the steady generation of smiles. It may not seem important at this point but it's wise to look ahead and get a gun which qualifies for such things as IPSC and IDPA. If it fits in with those groups then it will fit in with your average club events.
