Considering getting either a Browning 'BAR' or Benelli R1 semi-auto in .308 as a new deer gun. Mostly in Ontario, so large distances would not be an issue. Just want something different and new. Currently I'm using a Browning X-bolt in .300 WSM which is also my moose gun.

So, the question is: Which would the nutters recommend?

get a bar !!!! at least when you have it in your hands it feels like it wont fall apart..yah im benelli prejudice and champion brownings whenever i can....sue me :) ps the A5 will shoot circles around any benelli made ...ooops i did it again

I've owned a number of BARs, and none has ever gave me any greif...Never owned an R1, but sighted a few in...No issues with the R1 either...Accuracy was comparable..

Either way you can't go wrong...In the BAR I do personaly prefer the all steel safari...Most do not but, I love the mag design on the BAR..

I have both. I prefer the R1, it fits me the best.
BAR is good to. I didn't like the floor plate system, so I converted mine to a fully detachable SXR magazine. With a 308 you could also get the FNAR magwell:) The R1 mag is tight to snap in.]

Anyways, they're both great, buy the one that feels the best.

I've owned both and still own the R1. It is lighter, better balanced, easier to clean and just a simpler overall design. The BAR is heavy with most of the weight up front and that made for a difficult carrying gun. Both are very accurate, but my R1 is much nicer to lug around all day,

You really can't go wrong with either, but pick up both and decided which you will prefer to carry. Cheers,

Patrick

I'm not personally a fan of centerfire semi's for hunting, but I have a number of friends that use BAR's and they all love them... .270, .308, 300 Win Mag etc... I guess that I'm just old enough to have heard a truck load of "My semi jammed and the moose walked away" stories! :D
Most of my big game hunting is done with bows... when I pick-up centerfire arms it is usually a single shot or lever. :)

Good stuff folks. I'm leaning toward the BAR myself, but wondered about the R1.

In any case I'll be sure to try both.

So which do you prefer, the R1 of the BAR? Not seeing how this^ helps the OP?
Most of the game I've shot with my semi have gone down with 1 shot. It must've jammed, 'cause it's a semi, but I never noticed because it usually only takes 1 shot, just like with a bow.

I like the feel and reduced reciol of a semi for hunting. Follow up shots for multipe targets is a plus too.

I've handled the R1 and own a BAR in .338.

The R1 has a totally different feel than any other rifle I've held (except the Winchester SXR (sp??), which is a copy of the R1). You'll either really like the feel of the R1, or be put off with it. Everything I've read or heard suggests the R1 is reliable and accurate.

My BAR has a more classic feel and is very accurate and reliable. It's a bit heavier, but I've never been a guy who cares whatsoever about a pound or two heavier on a rifle, especially a magnum.

They are both good.

What I like about the R1 that I own:
Easy to clean and disassemble
Accurate
Reliable
Perfect balance
It feels life perfection; the stock is ajustable for lenght, height and you can make it left-handed
You can also make the safety left-handed

I think the R1 is a more advanced and simpler design. The BAR is a proven classic...

Hey Northman,

The Winchester SXR, the BAR longtrac + shorttrac, and the FNAR are all the same gun made by FN. They just have different stocks.

The BAR Safari's are different and are still like the old style BARS.

Original post.Have you decided yet?Best to try them for fit,as already stated, they are very different from each other.I believe you can not go wrong with your choice.

Dont own no R-1 and Bar but do own 2 MR-1 and the r must be for reliability, if i ever need a semi i will go with a Benelli... JP.

Haven't gone to try them out yet, did pop into Epps on the weekend, but just too busy. Probably go to the new SAIL in Vaughn or good ol Le Barons Mississauga.

Will let you guys know what I get.

I have never fired a Benelli but they do have an excellent reputation. I do own a BAR in 30-06 and find it to be a very good rifle.
My only small complaint with the Bar is the mag system, it's reliable but not the most convienent to change out.

I bought a BAR 7mm a few years back. It just fit better than the Benelli. Its never failed me, but I can't stand the mag system. I looked around for a way to change it over to a fully detachable mag and never found one. I'll have to check out switching it to a SRX mag.

I have a Bar 300 winmag and I don't mind the weight, its not so bad to worry about.
The extra weight, I think makes it more stable & very accurate, that's for sure..

but everyone is saying it's reliable, but I can't be the only one that it doesn't fully load sometimes and have to give it a shove to fully close the breach ?
so, no, it's not fully reliable... but overall good gun
That's a long casing to deal with in a semi-auto... I'd think the shorter casing calibres may function more reliably ?

never shot a R1, so can't make claim about its reliable feeding or not? ? Suppose to be a good gun.. I'm curious to hear from everyone, if their Bar or R1 always fully feeds next round after shot after shot ?
Remington semi's were suppose to be know for the unreliable feeding, but i'm sure others have same problem.

any recommondations on how to secure better feeding in my gun, would be great added info to this thread.
