Even with the velocity losses from the short barrel, the guide gun fits my requirements for powerful compact package.
The 45-70 Gov and the 450 M don't rely on velocity for penetration so the barrel lenght is ready not a big concern - Just say'in if you didn't already know this ! Cheers RJ

Yes, I know the caliber well. Some high velocity fans have not got the memo about how well the 4570 performs, even at trapdoor velocities for that matter. regards, t4t
18" may handle a bit better in tight quarters if you hunt those areas, but a 22" is manageable also. As for loosing speed with the shorter tube, I wouldn't worry much about that. Once you get a 400gr style hard cast lead bullet moving at around 1100fps or faster it will penetrate almost any big game animal in North America. I run a 405gr hard cast gas check at around 1450fps and it has penetrated length wise on moose.
