I have an HP-9 and want to get a longer replacement barrel. I've seen that you can replace the 14" using a 870 barrel, but I wanted to be sure about what 870 barrels that can be used.

Reason I ask, is I bought a for-end from an 870(may have been a wingmaster???), but it didn't fit(it was way too long). Wasn't sure if there were different 870 barrels that wouldn't fit on an express frame either.

I saw a few in the EE that look promising, but I wanted to be sure what I needed to ask about before contacting the sellers.

Thanks,
Jody.

cool..thanks!

what about a 3 1/2-inch barrel?

from the Rem site, it looked like it would be ok(assuming 3 1/2 is super magnum). I probably won't go this route, but just curious...

forend I got was from an 1100 semi...

figured out why the forend didn't fit..

there was a post in the EE from Wrong Way selling a Rem 1100 semi. The pattern matches the one I got, so it looks like that is the reason it was longer and didn't fit so well on my 870.

Still going to try to use it though, after I make a few more changes.

here is the original...

and if you compare it to the one Wrong way has on the EE...looks the same to me..

made some changes, and now it fits, but the inside is different, so need to rig something up to hold it in tight..I still need to do a bunch of sanding(especially on the butt) and oil it. Hopefully it looks ok when I'm done.

Here are a few pictures of where I'm at now...

So with that cleared up, I'll go ahead and get that longer barrel without any worries:)

As I've posted in the past the barrel/magazine lug for a Grizzly/HP-9 is shorter than that of a Remington barrel.

What this means is that the muzzle is farther from the magazine tube at the front - then it is at the rear. That is why you hear of people having to modify the barrel to fit the Norc/Griz properly.

In my case the barrels fit with a little force fit (i.e. no modifications to receiver or barrel).

However, given that the barrel will not evenly contact the receiver I suspect the variation from shot to shot (as it tries to settle in) might cause the barrel to throw shot/slugs differently.

In the case of shot it would probably not be noticed. With slugs it probably will as the harmonics of the barrel have been changed. Would be interested in having someone compare the same length remington barrel with a Grizzly barrel in a Grizzly/Norc receiver to see if this is correct.

I just posted this again in another thread but I'll paste it in here as well...

do the Norinco barrels index perfectly on 870s, and vice-versa?

The two 14 " Norinco HP-9 barrels I tried on a few different 870 receivers were all loose fitting and twisted slightly off to the side and did not index perfectly...the 870 barrels I tried on the HP-9 either did not fit or were a very tight fit and were also not indexed correctly.

In my opinion they will function but they are a little out of spec.

Here's what the 14" norc looked like on a remington receiver....this 870 has a flat topped receiver and is resting flat on the desk with the sides of the receiver vertical....in the second picture I twisted the mag cap so the slots are vertical and horizontal and the square is also an obvious reference....look at the lug on the barrel..
