Barrett 98B or PGW C14 Timberwolf??

Guys, I need some input here please.

I wanted to buy the new Accuracy Intl AX338, but seeing as most parts are optional accessories, it becomes a pretty expensive rifle.

So I was thinking maybe a Barrett 98B in 338 Lapua, but have been reading quite a few reviews of owners saying they were shooting 0.8 MOA and larger groupings - even saw 2 guys saying 1.5 MOA.

I then read some reviews today on the PGW C14 Timberwolf with folding stock, and I quite like it.

Anyone had the opportunity to own or shoot both?? Your views on which one to buy?

The price difference is around $1200.

Any accuracy issues with the 98B vs C14? I have never physically seen any of the 2.

Some insights, opinions etc would be most welcome.

i owned both pgw c14 timberwolf barett 98b sold then .ihave the ai ax 338 as you wolud say expensive but seriously accurate
 
Won my fair share of gongs with a C14. Never had an issue. I was shooting issued ammo which isn't the best stuff out there. I'm sure it would be fantastic with the right handloads.

I kind of like the look of the 98B, the AI AX and the folding stock C14.

I'm not too worried about the name - more after an accurate rifle and one that has the kind of looks as described above....

Going full custom - do we get a more conventional looking rifle (like the non-folding stock C14), or can one get something that resembles the AX/98B in the "looks" department?

Please pm me some prices for your custom rifles.

Any reason to stay away from the 98B? It's a great "package", but as I said, i have read some reviews where a few were complaining about accuracy - at $5500 one would expect to have at least some decent accuracy....

The PGWDTI Timberwolf has received many, very many, positive reports from members of this board as, indeed, have all their products so if I was looking to spend a significant sum of money on a .338 Lapua that is probably the route I would go or, perhaps the TRG 42 ( no one ever claims TRG's can't shoot! ). Being more of a .308 man myself that is where most of my cash goes, but I have ventured into the .338 world and find my Savage 110 BA in that calibre to be a remarkably accurate rifle for a sum of money that is much less than the AI, TRG, PGW rifles.
 
I was going to buy the AX338, but then was told the following were EXTRAS:

1) Bipod - few hundred $
2) Case - $320
3) Rear adjustable "spike" - $130

and a few other "optional extras" which are all incuded in the 98B's price...

This would put the AX338 (with folding stock) of $8130 at around $9000 once these have been added.... that's 65% more than a Barrett 98B....

I don't want to spend $9000 on a rifle. :)

I already, fortunately, have a Schmidt & Bender PMII 5-25x56 for the new rifle.

A very easy and cheap route would be to buy a savage in 338 lapua. If it isn't accurate enough for ya then you can simply buy a shilen match barrel. Won't be nearly as pretty but the accuracy potential is equal or greater then your other options.
 
I hear you on the Savage - it's just that part of the allure is the "looks" of the rifle too....

Yeah I know, I should have been a girl if "looks" are also important, but it's like anything in life I guess - it must LOOK nice too.... Hehehe.

If a Ferrari or a Porsche had the performance, but looked terrible, would people pay the money for it that they do?? :):)
 
I have a Timberwolf C14 love it! It is very accurate! You can not go wrong with the C14 and you will save some $$$ compared to the AX338. The AI 338 is a great rifle no doubt but is big money for a .338. Here is a 4 shot group I shot at 640 yards 2.9" on AR-500 screwing around with gongs. On paper this group would have printed tighter but I measured from the edges of the bullet splat marks definitely larger then .338 in dia. but oh well! paper gets so boring.

Currently the best bang for the buck is Savage, very accurate out of the box, there is nothing will come closed to the performance for the price. I still like to get my hand on another Sako TRg22 and an AI AW.
 
You Salvage guys crack me up. A 338 Lapua, for the most part, shoots three dollar bills, depending on bullet choice and brass. Some shoot five dollar bills. There is no way I would make that kind of investment in components, time, and effort, to shoot that round out of a cheap rifle. Thats right. I said it. Its a cheap rifle. The fact that it shoots halfway decent, for the cost of, does not change this. Out of all of rifles mentioned on this thread, a custom, or a TRG-42 truly are the best values.
If you are looking to shoot .338L and save a few bucks, look again. It ain't cheap, and if you shoot that round out of a cheap rilfe, you'll be disapointed, quickly.

we have 14 timber wolfs in our shops here on base, they are all diffrent. these were early production rifles. most of the problems are the threading on them, each rifle is not interchangable. im not sure about later production rifles, if there any quality issues with them. they do shoot nice, ive shot them just out to about 1200 meters and yea i chuckle alittle when it goes bang or pffffft when we shoot with the can on them.

You may also be interested in a Sako TRG-42 with a folding stock. It will be around the price of a PGW, but less than the AI.

You really can't go wrong with the PGW though, I've shot a friends PGW Coyote and that is one sweet rifle!
 
Ok, assume you have a a $2500 budget for rifle less optics, with the "salvage" that gives you the gun, a shilen match barrel, a one piece base a trigger and some change. You can't even buy a trg 42 for that price, plus it wouldnt be surprising if he savage outshot the trg.
