Barrett 98B or PGW C14 Timberwolf??

GlobalStar66

I have shot both the AW & AX 338’s, they are definitely a nice rifle, I have not shot the Barrett98B, but have shot some of there other rifles and there not for me.

With that being said I own a PGW C14 Timberwolf, nothing wrong with the AI firearms but the additional cost of adding this and that to the total is what scared me away from them. The Timberwolf comes with everything you need for the gun minus a scope and ammo for one reasonable price.

Ross & Steve are excellent to deal with at PGW. If you want any more of my opinion on the T-Wolf PM me.

I reload with good components and my cost’s are as follows:

$0.60 ~ 250g Scenars (59.97/100)
$0.36 ~ GM215M Primer (36.00/1000)
$0.32 ~ H1000 Powder (92.5g/7000)/$24.00)
$0.15 ~ Brass (Annealed of course) ($1.50each/ten fires easy, I am on 18 on some brass)

So my gun shoots $1.43 dollar bills! (+ Tax of course)

Best of luck and welcome!

MM

The reason I am "waiting" to see what happens, is that I like the LOOKS of the AX338 chassis, or the Cadex chassis. Rick is waiting to see if his action could be made to fit either.

I'm not a big fan of a "hunting" look on the stock for a 338 Lapua, so something like the Macmillan stocks or even the (normal) PGW stocks don't do it for me. The PGW folding stock is MUCH better to me, but I also like really tight tolerances so that it's very accurate - something most military rifles are not necessarily - they are not built to have extremely tight tolerances, as they need to work in sand, snow and harsh environments etc.... It's currently the ONLY reason why I haven;t just taken the plunge and bought the AX338 or the C14 (and for that matter, the 98B).

If Rick can get his action into an AX338 or Cadex chassis, then I'll order that. :)

Or, if the AX338's price is right, even that, as that's the "look" I like most of all, and the AX338 owners I've spoken to in the past few days, are VERY happy with their guns.

I have some time, so the wait might just be worth it.

I was a huge fan of the ax series as well. The Mcmillan Stocks were not my favorite until I got my hands on one. I was always a big fan of the pistol grip. The one other option you have with doing a custom build to, is there are other color choices than black with there stocks. Might help with the "aesthetically pleasing" part. Any of those 3 choices your looking into you really cant go wrong. Good Luck!

I'm not feeling the love anymore for my A5's. Does anyone know if the Timberwolf barreled action would drop right into the folder or is there some major fitting required?

I believe their proprietary recoil lug system may preclude this. I would check with Ross or Steve as they would have the best intel on what will or won't fit a PGW rifle.

I'm assuming the action on the folder would be the same as what I have on the A5. Hopefully Ross will chime in....

We build a few rifles with the Timberwolf actions and we actually have 1 in the shop right now on consignment in an A5 stock. The recoil lug system is much different than most bolt action rifles. In the A5s you have to bed a metal block into the stock for the recoil lugs to lock into. I do not think this can be done in a metal chassis. Probably 1 would have to mill the slots into the chassis so as the recoil lugs could lock in place. Whether it is feasible to do is a good question.

Yes I am pretty sure this is not a problem! But you would still have to bed the action into with the PGW recoil lug system into the folder. I have the A5 on my Timberwolf and the LRT-3 has the folder and it is still bedded into the chassis.

Thanks for all the info and pictures - much appreciated.

I have made contact with Ross at PGW, and I went to go see Rick at ATRS - I'll soon have the answers to my "questions".

I wish it was a few weeks into the future, so I had the answers and could have a gun in my hands.... :)

MAN, that's nice!!!!

Where do you live, that you have access to a place to shoot that 50?

I would LOVE to get a 50, but no idea where I'll be able to go shoot it, as we've only been in Canada now for 2 months, and I don't know anyone with space to shoot one... :)

Maybe ONNNNNEEEE day.

It would need to be bedded....best done here...

I would respectfully request that any questions are emailed to rs@pgwdti.com as it can be difficult to answer questions on a thread particularly if you are away from it for a while...Thanks..

You can save yourself some money buying a custom! No doubt! You can save even more if you use cheaper components in your custom.

One thing to think about is resale.

Your custom is what YOU picked out, may not be as appealing to others. (Poop Storm starter)

I'm sure ATRS makes a nice rifle. As is the AI and PGW rifles ~ However

My Advise to you is to get what you REALLY REALLY want! If your not sure wait a bit longer, There not going anywhere.

My 2 Cents.
