Hello yee wise CGN members,
I have a Bavarian M1 carbine (stock, handgard, operating rod, trigger housing, and bolt are all stamped with the last four digits of the receiver serial number) The receiver is IBM serial number 3764030. The carbine is in very good+ condition but has one major flaw.... the barrel has been replaced with a commercial 20" barrel. I want to restore this sweetheart back to its correct condition. What barrel should I find to replace the 20" replacement with? My research indicates that the receiver was manufactured in 1944 but apparently IBM stopped marking its barrels in 12-43 Should I (if I can find one) put on a 1943 IBM barrel or an unmarked barrel... or what?

Cheers,
Martin

well check with the CFC/RCMP 1st there was a time they were NOT allowing you to do what you want to do

and if they allow you to ill buy your 20" barrel

The carbine is currently restricted as whoever put on the 20" barrel never deregistered it. It won't change the carbine's classification to put the shorter barrel on...question is... which would be the correct barrel?

Ruth/Duff say that your receiver was made in the Oct-Dec 1943 timeframe, so an IBM barrel of late 1943 vintage would be correct. Based on the low percentage of Carbines produced by IBM, it will be tough to locate a loose IBM barrel. If you get lucky someone may have a take-off IBM barrel that was removed in order to de-restrict another IBM Carbine. NPM and Standard Products also used some IBM barrels as original installations.

Most of re-barreling was done overseas and the original barrel was left there. Another issue to consider is that during the re-barrel process, many of the M1 Carbine receivers broke doing it. Since it was done overseas, they just took another gun and started over. Just something to consider before you do it.
