I can't get the bayonet off my 1891/30. It came with the bayonet on backward and I can't release it. It is not on really tight but pushing the button does nothing. Can anyone help me?

The button cannot lock the bayonet in place if backward. Use a hardwood block against the socket than tap the block with a mallet, the bayo should come free. Bayonet socket always fit very tight on the barrel.

Thanks, that worked. I thought it was a way to store the bayonet when not in use but I guess it was just an easy way to pack it in the box.
My first one came shipped that way. It was a pig to get off the barrel. I beat on it with a 2x4 for a while with no results. Then I just twisted it back and forth HARD and it gradually worked loose. The button thing does nothing when the bayonet is on reversed like that, so don't worry about that. The bayonet is just stuck on by friction. Wail on it and it'll come off.

It's the cosmoline that keeps the bayonet on so tight. A squirt or two of WD-40 under the bayonet and it breaks down the cosmoline and it slides right off.
As above. A brass hammer is a milsurp owners best friend.
In fact they are the most handy thing to have for any mechanical work.
Try a hammer with brass and hard plastic ends, they can be replaced when they get damaged. Lots of socket bayonets need a bit of work inside the socket it is the hardest part to clean there is usually some corrosion. Any socket bayonet you get for a rifle needs cleaning, there slight differences from one manufacturer to another they aren't exactly the same. Just 1mm can make a differenc. if you go to a dealer to purchase a rifle like the Mosin Nagant try several bayonets until you get one that fits properly.
