BB soon - looking for holster/mag pouch/belt

Hello, me and the wife want to do BB course. Im looking for holster and mag pouch. I've read a couples tread yesterday to learn a little more on that since im a newb with that stuff. I notice some of you guys are using CR but it look like its too much for me $. I check out Blade-tech website too it seem to be a lot cheaper but there a like 5 different holsters to choose from. I notice there is a lot of different mag pouch too: single, double, quad... Im open to other brand too. What would be good starting gear. Im ready to invest in decent gear right now but I dont need what's best out there. Remember im newb.

I have a 1911 single stack. I might need more or different mags as well as I have 7 rounds mags - need advices on that too.

Need gear for a baby eagle too.

Welcome to the money pit called IPSC. :D

If you spend the money on the right equipment to start it is cheaper in the long run.

I'd recommend a CR Speed belt, a Bladetech DOH (dropped off set) holster and safariland mag pouches.

Belts are about $60, mag pouches are about $40 each and the holster will be about $65. You should be able to set up each rig for under $350 and they will last you a very long time.

You may want to look at some 10 round mags at some point down the road but your 7 rounds will get get you through your BB course. They will also assist you in getting really good at mag changes. I highly recommend Tripp Industries for single stack mags.

As for the rig for your baby eagle you may have a hard time finding the Bladetech holster so start looking now and if you find it buy it right away as they are hard to come by.

This is a very solid recommendation. Buy the right stuff in the first place even if it costs more, and you won't end up replacing it later for even more money. I speak from far too much experience on that one.

The CR high torque belt rig is the best one out there that I know of, so don't look at anything else. They pretty much set the industry standard for belts. The DOH Blade tech will do everything you need it to do for years to come and is an excellent holster for twice the money. You can also look at CR speed for pouches http://www.rescomp.co.za/speed_pouches.htm. Their Versa pouch will shim to take single stack mags and they are the same money as Safariland but in my mind, a little more durable (I have both so I know), although Safariland would also be fine.

I special ordered a Bladetech DOH for the BEagle from 911Supply, but took about 2 months for it to arrive. Ordering directly from the manufacturer would have taken the same amount of time as they were backlogged (not sure if that's changed).

The CR belt and Versa pouches for the BEagle I picked up locally from IPSC Store.

I couldn't be happier my choice in equipment (and my wallet thanks me too).
 
You're better off buying the best gear - for what you want to do - from the beginning. If you can identify your main requirement, whether IPSC or CCW or whatever, and then buy the best for that job you'll save both money and aggravation.

If it is IPSC (I want to be competitive), just buy a top-quality race holster now. You'll want one later anyway. http://www.freedomventures.ca/home.htm

If it is CCW (I want to play at IPSC), don't buy a half-baked solution - buy the best. (IMO, Bladetech is neither fish nor fowl. It works for either but does neither well.) For kydex for CCW, look at Sidearmor.

Hmmmmmm........ Manny Bragg, one of the TOP shooters from the US (http://www.frankgarciausa.com/abouteb.html) would probably disagree. After having a gun fall out of a race holster some time ago, he now uses a Blade-Tech DOH exclusively. He used one to great effect at the recent IPSC Canada National Championships.......

i would suggest you talk to your Black Badge Instructor and look at what is available in your area. a kydex holster is a good first purchase.

I agree. While I am nowhere near an expert, I much prefer the Bladetech DOH to a race holster. I find the Bladetech lets me draw more aggressively and gives me more confidence in my freedom of movement. I think it is a mental thing, seeing a gun sit precariously in a race holster, but having seen a few guns fall from them does give me pause.

Im up in fort mac so I will order everything online. I notice he had a cr belt and 4 mag pouches. Not sure about the holster maybe a ghost. Now it sounds like I should go with cr belt, DOH holster and versa pouches for both guns.
 
the Bladetech DOH is probably the most popular holster in the USA for Production div, as well as very popular in Standard. CR Speed is obviously number one in Open and Standard, and up here I would guess most PD guys use them too. I'm not one of them. I hate CR holsters and mag pouches. if you want to spend the money on good quality, highly adjustable mag pouches, go with Guga Ribas, they'll work with all your mags, yes they are pricey, but they are worth every penny. If you don't want to spend the money and want to get some good adjustable mag pouches go Ghost. For holsters, again Guga if you can spend the money, and if they make one for the gun you have, for the 1911 they will, for the Eagle, I am not sure, but I think they do as BE's are very popular in South America. Or equally as good is the Ghost Holster, also a hugely popular holster, and getting more so as they add more and more guns to their lineup, pricey, but a great product! If you don't want to spend the money on the Guga holster then go Bladetech DOH, or Blackhawk Serpa/CQC (whichever type you want, one has the finger lock, the other doesn't, but not sure which model is which). Daves Surplus (sponsoring dealer) can hook you up with either and advise you as to which is which. for Guga stuff check out CRAFM (sponsoring dealer), and for Ghost DTJos (also a sponsoring dealer).
 
Since you are up in Fort McMurray, i would suggest a phone call to Len at Phoenix in Edmonton would be in order. he carries CR, Forbes as well as other gear. Have a chat with Willie (flint i beleive on here) and he can give you a lot of good advice and he is in Fort Mac. Len supports IPSC Alberta big time. just look at the back of our team shirts for Nationals! Not to mention that he supported two stages at IPSC Alberta's Provincials.

CR speed belt is the best.
Mag pouches I prefer Guga, as they come with inserts that allow different mags and are adjustable. BT DoH, or Speedsec. I also am trying out Ghst, looks verynice.
 
I have the Ghost mag pouches and they're pretty nice. A lot better than the surplus police double pouches with the flaps cut off that were $10 that I started with.
 
I found that CR Speed holster is too long for a production gun -
is it Production legal to cut it down?
 
The production rules mainly talk about the gun, not the holster or mag pouches.

Question for you though: Why don't you just get a cheaper production-style holster instead of modifying an expensive race holster?
 
Atleast I don't agree.

A super duper holster is a nice to have, but ipsc is a little like golf in that a newbie can buy the best clubs that money can buy and will suck. While tiger woods could probably shoot for par with a wiffle bat.

A plastic uncle mikes setup will cost you about 40 Bucks and lets you get in the game. When you want to move up you can sell it. This is what I did when I got the CR speed system. I am sure that the guy that I bought the CR speed moved on up to something else.

Fast draw is important and a determining factor in winning when you are at a master class level. When you are starting out its much more important to just play safe and have fun.

Also the turnover rate in ipsc is horrendous. There were about 20 people on my black badge course last year. Only a few of these come regularily to the shoots now. In my mind it is better to run what you brung have fun. When it becomes a complete obsession well feel free to remortgage the house for a great set of mag pouches.
