BC Moose hunt options...

are there no Moose on Vancouver Island?

There was a very realistic plywood cut-out of a bull moose put up at the edge of a meadow beside the Island Highway south of Sayward but I think the RCMP or Highways Dept. had it taken down. Too many people were stopping in the dangerous location thinking it was the real thing.

Most hunters dont go to farr off the road regardles of claims online
Evan less hire a plain
A taxadermas mite suggest a fly in lake he is not going to tell you any one particular spot but it'd wearth a shot
The helicopter pilots and prospected working in the Area your looking at are a good source just don't show up and make a pain of your salf bring a box of coffee and donuts go's a long ways
I know wen I was working as helicopter rigger we seen plenty of moose I can tell you wear I seen them!
but wear is the fun in that ,do the work and you will figger it out

The big challange is going to a totally new territory where you have absolutely no idea where to go,and no chance of preseason scouting. When it comes to hunting, local knowlege is everything

Adversity builds character....... Show up a couple days before your hunt.... Scout and position your guys accordingly.....

You may not get as many as you would in an area you have known for years..... But each one will be more satisfying when you beat the odds........

True, but going green can pay off. As an example, even though I haven't been drawn for moose for years, I went with a couple buddies to region 6-08 where we'd never been before in 2011 or '12 and after about five days of hunting and help from the guy at the next camp we pretty well had an area dialed in and one of them got a moose. Other guy had a good opportunity too but fouled it up.

Last year too, we went totally blind into 6-06, scouted around, found a few likely places and though it took longer than expected, they got one each.

I've applied for an area I have never been to for this year's draw. I like to see new country and if you don't look you won't see right?

And sometimes people with experience in an area will offer help on this site or others as well if you ask nicely.

We're willing to charter a float plane, but who with or where to go,I have no idea

Iv flown with ers out of muncho before, he will give you straight up info, if you have a inflatable boat, I'd just pick a small lake on the map and go for it, all those back country swampy lakes hold moose, and caribou a lot of the time to. Iv flown out of dease a few times, but not since bc/Yukon took over ootsa air, but any lake up in that country, you can't go wrong imo. When a guy starts flying meat out tho, things can get $$$ for extra trips.

I would think boning out meat would be smart when flying out...yes,we have a 10' zodiac,do you paddle or pack in a small outboard?

Now your talking my game yes boning out your moose will help a lot
We also lightly smoke the meat for 6 to 12 hr depending on weather
Boned out and light smoke two guys can pack out a moose in one trip

I would like to know more about your smoking setup.

If it was me I would not pack a motor keep everything light and simple
You pack a motor and gas the less food you bring 4 guys eat a lot of food in a week
What if you get 4 moose its not imposable ?

SMOKING MOOSE MEAT
The simples is to hang your moose like usawal well hunting just not so high cover meat in black pepper to keep the flys off your meat
make an A frame lean-to aroand your meet out of tree braches over the meat
Make a small smoky fire I use either alder or coten wood on one end of
Lean-to don't let it get hot(lots of air and smoke in your lean-to is a good thing) your not cooking the meat just smoking it lightly
If it hot smoke for 6 hr
If it's early in your hunt and need to save the meat you need a heavy smoke
Like all thing nothing is free the longer in the smoke the dryer and tuffer the meat but I like smoked moose meat
And bone out your meat it is simple way to save and pack out your meat
I hope I was clear I'm not good with wrighting and hope this helped

There are sum youtub vidio on smoking moose meat but I never seen any doing it the indain way all of them will work
the link this is one more way to smoke moose meat

Okay I found sum more info I will add links you will get the idea
Wen we smoke moose it much more rustic as we pack varry Little in the way of suplise
http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwo...ime-smoke-some-moose-meat-alaska-style-157029
With a bit of work you can smoke and dry out a entire moose and pack it out as a one man show but that's a lot of jerky but better then wasting it

Carverk thanks. Sorry for the derail fellas.

It's not derailing getting the moose out is the bigges challenge on this tipe of hunt
most guys today know nothing about getting game out of the bush thay think it can't be dun with out a Argo ,ATVs ,jet boats, jacked up 4x4 and winches
We dun it for ever with just packboars and on the cheep

Fortionately my hunting partner is a surgeon and a South African who grew up on a game farm...we leave the meat cutting and boning out to him..

A lot of good info here RBF. Flyins are great if you have prior knowledge of the area, but risky if not. I cleaned moose off of locomotives for 3 years that came from Fort Nelson to PG. Pick an area and learn the spots. Prior knowledge means getting there early and scouting. Hope this helps.

Yes,flying are expensive and we would prefer to drive in or do a float trip but we mainly want a good hunt and a nice 3-4 year old meat bull if possible. We like to hunt the last week of September or the first week of October, hopefuly to get cooler weather and to do some calling. But we're a long drive from home and we know it.we put in for a LEH in the Germanson landing area which we would like to float the Omineca River

Anyone have experience hunting the Fort St. James area? Heading there this year for the first time. Change from our hunting grounds of many years north east of PG.
