BC Proposal to BAN Scopes on Crossbows

In the OP it discusses the fact that when these archery seasons were put in place technology available at the time limited effective use to much shorter ranges than what modern crossbows are capable of, and not allowing scopes would help limit their range. Of course that seems to ignore the similar technological advancements in compound bows, and also ignores the fact that a scope doesn't make a crossbow shoot any farther.

While a scope doesn't make it shoot farther, as with guns, they most definitely encourage people to shoot at longer distances with much less difficulty.

I can see the same thing happening with shotguns/muzzleloaders in controlled hunt areas. Regulations were created long ago when shotguns/slugs weren't very accurate while todays shotguns with modern slugs are practically short range rifles.

I agree, scopes provide an advantage. However, I've never met a person who wasn't willing to take 75yd shots with iron sights on a rifle. Within the effective range of a crossbow, a scope helps but its not the same as a rifle where it increases the effective range to 300+ yds.

O my goodness. So your gonna tell me a crossbow and bow are on level ground in the deer woods? Seriously?

Point out the nonsense. I'd love to know.

It depends entirely on the operator. I very rarely hunt with my crossbow because I shoot my recurve just as well and the recurve is much easier and quieter to carry. Come to think of it, maybe we should ban recurves.

Bow is quieter for a follow up shot incase of a miss, bow doesnt require a cocking aide during follow up shot incase of a miss, crossbow you basically get one shot. Good luck cocking a crossbow in a tree stand if you miss. Crossbows still deal with arrow drop and sticks the same as bows, they arent some magical arrow gun like some may have you believe.

I can do the same with my compound bow that I do with my crossbow. This is stupid. Some people need them for vision problems. Stupid stupid stupid
People with disabilities are able to get exceptions to the rules. My buddy in a wheelchair can shoot from his truck or atv for instance.

Maybe we should take the sites of of my compound bow to.

Does your sight provide magnification?

Who the hell thinks up this stupid crap? I got an idea, hows about we all just mind our own goddamn business and let hunters hunt with a scoped crossbow if they want to. Holy sh*t folks, this is getting beyond stupid!

Pretty much my sentiments exactly.

Like crossbows or don't, but I figure whether you like 'em or not, if they get a person out hunting, it's not a bad thing.

I don't understand the mindset of those that figure they are somehow superior to other folks hunting the way they see fit.

Personally, I'd have few issues with chasing scopes off the muzzle loaders, before I'd see them removed from crossbows. And I'd have few issues with allowing the use of crossbows, Bows, as well as traditional style muzzle loaders all together in a 'primitive' season.

I'm trying to imagine what kind of butthurt idiot thought this was a good idea.

Have you shot bows much? Long distance shooting (up to 100 yards) with pins is difficult because most are designed for typical bow ranges which makes them almost useless at 75-100 yards. Many I have used would almost cover a deer at those ranges. However, put on your average crossbow scope and suddenly 75-100 yard shots are 10x easier.

Scopes on crossbows provide a huge advantage, hence the reason almost everybody has one on their crossbow.

What does the pins on a compound bow have to do with iron sights on a rifle or crossbow?

My point was scope or no, crossbows have limitations. It's not like a rifle where you can double or even triple your effective range by adding a scope. I even said in the post you quoted that they give an advantage.

So what do you think the drop is on an arrow moving 300fps @ 100 yards?

Even worse is the travel time - it'll take over a second for that bolt to get to 100yds, and the noise of the crossbow going off will get there a lot faster than that. Even if you ignore the possibility of the animal hearing the bow go off, that's a long time for the animal to take a step, turn, etc.

Drop can be calculated for. An animal taking a step or two cannot.

This is complete and utter nonsense , I shoot Traditional, compound bows and crossbows . Anyone who believes crossbows are good to 100 meters need to stop believing movies are real . The compound bows that are out now are no less accurate and lethal than Xbows and anyone who will fling arrows / bolts at game past 60 m ( with massive practice at that distance) is an ass . Removing scopes from Xbows is just god dam stupid .
