BC Proposal to BAN Scopes on Crossbows

So I gotta ask, for all those people who think this is a terrible idea... Would you rather crossbows be banned from the archery season? Modern crossbows with scopes are a lot closer to a rifle than they are a vertical bow IMO, they don't require anywhere near the skill or dedication to use/get good that a real bow requires.

I'm pro crossbow, but I see where they're coming from.

At the same time get rid of compound bows. They also require less of the archer than traditional bows...

Actually get rid of all the aids, and comercial hunting accessories. They aren't very sporting.

Make it illegal to hunt within 500m of any agricultural area because that isn't very sporting either.

And when you apply for your tag you should have to apply for a specific date as well... it isn't fair to the deer, or other hunters that someone has any more chance to hunt than deemed necessary.

You're missing the point. Archery seasons exist to reduce overall efficacy and thus increase opportunity. This doesn't mean a lot in BC where gun season is months long, but in the US where gun seasons only run for a few weeks and archery seasons go for months, it's more impactful.

Crossbows with scopes increase the efficacy, thus reducing the entire reason for the archery season.

Again, I don't give a ####. It's a one week season before 3 months of gun season, in our jurisdiction the difference doesn't amount to much. Im all for crossbows with scopes, because I have no time to get good with a real bow(not that I own one, but if I was to get into archery seasons that would be my entry point)... But it makes you wonder why even have an archery season if crossbows with scopes are allowed?

The Stockholm Syndrome suffered by many who worship Government dictates is... troubling... :yingyang:

Who the hell thinks up this stupid crap? I got an idea, hows about we all just mind our own goddamn business and let hunters hunt with a scoped crossbow if they want to. Holy sh*t folks, this is getting beyond stupid!

You do realize this is specific to ARCHERY season, right? Many jurisdictions do not allow crossbows at all in archery season.

I'm not from BC so I didn't know that. We have 3 months for archery. But only 2 weeks of gun and 1 of muzzle.

So for me I was able to get out this year with crossbow due to missing gun season.

as a bow hunter I don't see why they allow crossbows in archery season. mb does not unless you have a permit due to disability and I don't know of anyone who got one and I know a few who tried. have a bow only for the first half the allow both bows and crossbows for the second half. or something like that if they want. I have nothing against crossbows I just don't think there on the same level as a bow. there much faster and flatter shooting and yes they can shoot incredibly well out to past 100 yards.

Maybe we should just get rid of bow season altogether and people can use whatever they want in the General Open Season.

I now shoot a crossbow do to shoulder issues, been a recurve compound shooter for many years before. If Ontario followed with this scope ban so be it. If they banned scopes on rifles would we quit hunting. You have to admit there are a lot of toys out there to make us more effective killing game.

Not in Canada. Most provinces do not allow them during archery season.

https://www.outdoorcanada.ca/crosslaw/

Ontario and PEI (and BC) seem to be the only ones without any restrictions on their use during bow season according to the above link.

The WMU I hunt deer has two non bow weeks which are shotgun/BP/muzzle only. There is no rifle season.
You apply to hunt in either the first week, or the second week. If you get a tag for the week you applied to, you can hunt with shotgun/BP/muzzle.
If you don’t get a tag, you work on the honey-do list.
Every other week of the season is bow only.

Bow season is 9 days in my area, I think that's the same for most of the province. Splitting it in half isn't going to get you very far. Lol

That, specifically, is the point.

The Bow Association out here absolutely hates the fact crossbows are included in the archery seasons, and have dreamed up many ways to make them go away (Elitists). This, while completely ignoring the advances that make modern compound bows just as efficient. It is Bull#### IMO.

The chair of Region 2 BCWF recently tried to implement a province wide ban of crossbows. Due to public outrage, he withdrew that proposal. This is simply the latest manifestation thereof, and again, spearheaded by the Bow Association.

Regardless, the letters are indeed in the lawyers hands. Should the province decide to implement, they will be facing a rather serious legal challenge... As will every organization that supported it.

Nog

I thought we wanted to get more hunters in the field? ... You no ..Hunting
Why and how can any hunter support this type of regs..
Maybe the elitist compound bow cry babies should give up any thing that is not made of wood and feathers.. then call it even

Yeah, so most bow hunters PRACTICE

Damn I'm sure people slap a scope on their crossbow and shot it 10 times off a bench and say good enough.

Lots of bow hunters also shoot at short ranges. I say if you wanna scope your crossbow use it during rifle season.

The idea that without a scope you would be wounding more animals is absurd. If you can't make an ethical shot please stay home or used a rifle.

What are the harvest rates of crossbows compared to vertical?

It's not really a matter of opinion. You're factually wrong. They both have substantial let off, sights, triggers and effective ranges.
