BC Proposal to BAN Scopes on Crossbows

This proposal doesn’t surprise me ..... I hear all the time from people who have never hunted, how easy it is to shoot an animal with a rifle .... there are plenty of people that think all hunting is easy and want to make it harder.

If they only knew, how hard it can really be.

It's not really a matter of opinion. You're factually wrong. They both have substantial let off, sights, triggers and effective ranges.

The act of holding aiming and shooting a crossbow are all much closer to a rifle than a regular bow. Do they also share similarities with regular bows? Of course they do. The argument can be made both ways so I'd say it's totally a matter of opinion.

as a bow hunter I don't see why they allow crossbows in archery season. mb does not unless you have a permit due to disability and I don't know of anyone who got one and I know a few who tried. have a bow only for the first half the allow both bows and crossbows for the second half. or something like that if they want. I have nothing against crossbows I just don't think there on the same level as a bow. there much faster and flatter shooting and yes they can shoot incredibly well out to past 100 yards.

I hunt with a crossbow and know several others who do. None of us shoots to 50 yards, let alone 100. I've never used mine over 20.

I think that is the exact reasoning the powers that be here in Alberta use to justify not allowing them during the bow season.

I'll second this. A scoped crossbow is nothing more than a powder less short range rifle. Unless you have a disability it needs to be in the rifle season.

So, in that vein, should inline, modern , muzzle loader be allowed during a traditional season ? :)

Then your simply not using it to it's full potential. I have friends in the states with the pse tac 400. 400 fps. Tactical scope with drop chart. 3 to 4 inch groups with broadheads at 100 yards. Bows are not even close.

I will out do most people with a bow I shoot out to 90 yards all summer but I will not shoot past 50 on deer. That's my self imposed limit. too much can go wrong form wise. One little mistake in the heat of the moment(and your 100x more likely to make a form mistake on game then on targets) and your arrow is off the mark. Plenty enough to wound. Bows also have to be drawn and held. You can easily get busted by a deer just drawing the bow back. Crossbow not so much. Dial aim shot. Again I have nothing against them they are a good notch under muzzleloaders and shotguns but above bows.

What if I install a 1x "scope" (has a light filter, polarizer, etc) on a crossbow... or the I need a scope for medical/eyesight reason, like stated above...

I'm sure poachers do MUCH more damage to the wildlife/economy that these legit folks with crossbow & scopes.

ugh

Yup - pretty much the whole point of crossbows with scopes is to allow older hunters to make it happen.

If they call it a muzzle loader season, then it's fair game. But when they start using wording like traditional, it makes you wonder... And some states don't allow scopes during ML season (which I guess helps eliminate the issue of the increased efficacy of the modern inline ML). Lol

They're also how Mall Ninjas get out during archery season. I know more young guys with crossbows than compound bows because they take so much less skill to use effectively.

Guys who self limit themselves to shorter range with crossbows and don’t shoot to 100 yards are not using them to their full potential. But you, who can shoot better than most at 90 yards, but self limit yourself to 50 yard, you’re an ethical hunter. What’s the logic here?!?

I say "year round traditional season" and use recurve or longbow without sighting systems.

Then hunting becomes an art again.

Why is the B.C. government not worrying about the crappy way they deal with the herds of mule deer, moose, grizzly bear, wolves ect. before they piss around worrying about scopes on a cross bow my god we are in trouble. The #######s in government can't listen to the Biologists on how to manage our big game animals it won't matter if you have a scope on a cross bow or not.
