i would throw in 6 boxes of federal gmm 175g for the control ammo..... and i would expect the rifle to be gone at least 6 weeks + (1 week each way shipping). getting jerry to shoot it instead of a bunch of random dudes is that he is a known quality of shooter. i would also propose we send the rifles with no scopes so that variable is erased from the test.
trigger upgrades for the bcl102 should be allowed, the kac has an adequate trigger and the mh has even a better trigger.... see what jerry says.
I would be happy to work up some precision ammo and see what these rifles will do. If the group wants to see what factory ammo will do, if that is supplied, I would be happy to compare.
Thinking it would be nice to see how these rifles work with 3 commonly used factory ammo... GMM, good quality hunting and match. There is little point in using a surplus or milspec ammo. The performance isn't going to be great regardless of the platform. You guys can decide on the 3 but it will have a max bullet weight of 178gr... I think 168 is what I think would be max... 150ish gr likely ideal. Forget about any hot rodded/extra energy bolt action ammo... doesn't work.
I have some Hrn 150gr FMJBT that I would donate as the baseline bullet option... brass, primers also donated. This bullet has proven to be sub MOA capable and is something most can access if they want to reload.
I don't have any powder faster then Varget. IMR8208, H4895, Benchmark would be ideal for these types of rifles with the 150gr family of bullets. If we can pool some funds to get, that will go a long ways to get the best accuracy from these rifles and not strain the moving bits. I will load to moderate pressure only... similar to 7.62NATO spec.
Sorry, if you want to hot rod a semi, that is something you can do with your own rifle. They are not designed for this and why many perform badly with bolt action spec ammo.
Semis by nature are very sensitive to ammo tuning. A superb shooter can perform poorly if the powder charge is off by as little as 0.2gr. I will tune as I would any match rifle and the rifle will do what it can.
If the group wants to see how these rifles shoot with true match bullets, we can certainly do that... all options are possible. What would you guys move to if you wanted to handload? Berger, Sierra, Nosler, Hrn???? I would suggest no heavier then 178gr... I would suggest going towards 150gr as ideal. This will get pricey so it would be nice to get some "crowd funding".
I would work up each rifle shooting a hundred to two hundred rds... no this is not a one load wonder test. The rifles will be set up to use the MPOD and rear bag so that there is no concern about rest error. I will use my Sightron target scopes which go up to 50X... aiming error is not going to be a concern. If you want to provide a scope, by all means. We can discuss as many scopes just aren't going to help the result but I love testing new product.
Once the best load is determined... 3X5 rds test will be performed so that the average accuracy can be determined. All groups will be shot on 1 target with plenty of time to cool the barrel or whatever temp the barrel prefers to shoot its best. The goal is to demonstrate the accuracy potential... not one wallet sized group.
I will document and report each step so everyone can play along. For disclosure: I do not sell any firearms so have no financial interest in the outcome of any of these rifles. The tests will be done with the intent to extract the best performance from each rifle. The results will not be selectively adjusted to give a desired outcome... the rifles will do what they do - good, bad or ugly, that is how I will report.
So, you may or may not like the results but it will be accurate for the rifle being tested. Any function problems will be reported.
All rifles need to have a muzzle thread of 5/8-24 so I can mount a muzzle brake of my choosing... sorry, I am not going to be beat up testing these rifles. Not really worried about buttstocks.. whatever is typical for that rifle as purchased. Free floating forends would be ideal but if a rifle doesn't come that way, so be it. Being able to mount a T slot rail will be important and I will discuss with the owner before anything is sent to me. Yes, I can use a pedestal rest if necessary but most forends on military type rifles do not sit well on front rests... the MPOD is miles more stable.
Regarding costs, I think crowd funding will be nice.... there is the powder, return postage with insurance, factory ammo, and any match bullets desired to be tested. This can easily hit a few hundred $ for each rifle tested.
The time window will be late Sept to when the snow flies... definitely need each rifle for 3 to 4 wks as weather is going to be a factor and I don't go to the range every day. Every effort will be made to let each rifle shoot at their best. This is not a torture or abuse test. I want each rifle to be successful and offer the steps to get the most from each platform.
If there is interest to continue, I will need rifles volunteered for this test. Some concensus on ammo, bullets and format on the testing. This is as much a CGN community test as it is for my personal knowledge... maybe a new post so we can get the ground rules and project documented. I am not interested in fan boy hate or love. This is a performance test for pure accuracy on target at 100 and possibly 250yds.
The balls in the CGN court....
