What do ya say to a fella who knows #### all about hunting but still offers his unapproving comments about how unsporting bear baiting is?

Most of you bear baiters have come across this at one time or another, how'd ya deal with it?

I suppose I could offer to take him out or I could just kick him in the nuts.

Either will do the job. Frankly I am at the point in my life where I can't be bothered wasting my breath on fellow hunters...........they are always so sure they are right about how they view things. My time is better spent with kids and non-hunters who don't already know it all and are, surprisingly, usually more receptive when you take them out and show them how things work.

bait

Does he fish???

If he does I guess it would just be a line and a weight. Much more sporting that way.

Arguing with guys like that is like trying to teach a pig to sing.

BTW I have taken a lot of bears and have yet to take one over bait. I have no problem with someone that wants to work that hard, but I'd rather just sit against a tree and call them to me.:D When I'm callin, I always have something come in. It never gets boring.

What call do you use Redfrog?? I figured if I just yelled out: "Has anybody seen my birkenstocks?" I'd be knee deep in Grizzlies but I'm hunting Black bear.

"I figured if I just yelled out: "Has anybody seen my birkenstocks?" I'd be knee deep in Grizzlies"

HAHAHA that's the best thing I've read all day!

I like the 'fishing with hook and weight only' comment... makes a good arguement!

I don't have an answer to those close minded individuals.

Ps- don't let any bears come up your stand this year eh......and if it does, take lots of pics

ask him when he smells the coffe and donuts at timmes does he pull in and get a few ? or perhaps the KFC odur ? its all the same a form of marketing if you will to lure a customer in to aquireing your product
in our case the product just happens to be a small peice of lead moving at speeds well over 1500 FPS

I don't think we're allowed to bait in B.C.,no real need to anyways.I see hundreds of bears throughout the season.I'm not really partial to bear meat though so I haven't bothered to take one.I can't speak for the rest of B.C. but if you can't get a decent bear in region 3 your doing something wrong. As for baiting being unsporting I wouldn't agree, unnecessary but not unsporting.

calls

Lazy Ike, I use open reed distress calls. Cub, and fawn, distress work best.
I don't often cold call bears, unless it is an area that holds lots of bears. Usually I find some fresh sign, tracks etc. The great thing about calling is some other predator is also likely to show up for the free lunch. Being an equal opportunity assassin, I try to let the air out of them as well. [provided they are in season]:D
When calling bears I call pretty much continuously for 30-45 minutes. when I have them on visual, if I stop calling they usually stop coming. This gives me a chance to check for cubs or rubbed bears. If I start calling again, they will usually continue on in.

"Logic" this twerp into submission Mumps... in front of other people if possible... ask him what exactly he finds distasteful about baiting. He will likely come up with the statement that it is "too easy" or "not fair". Ask him if he has ever hunted over bait... or even killed a bear?
No?
Then ask him what he is basing his opinion on...Science or Ethics?
The science is that hunting over bait is the only effective management tool in areas where no other form of hunting is viable or as effective! And it keeps the bears away from Urban settings where they can cause problems for stupid city dwellers... like your uneducated friend.
The Ethical issue is that it is easier to distinguish a Sow from a Boar when you are hunting over bait. They are closer and more readily identified so there is less chance of shooting a Sow with Cubs. It is much more ethical to make a good shot at close range and kill your bear cleanly than it is to try a long shot on a moving bear.
Ask your buddy if he hunts in corn fields.... or used an attractant scent or cover scent... or use calls when hunting... is this not the same thing?
As soon as he goes silent... ask him what it is like to be mercifully free of the ravages of intelligence? Before he can answer just laugh and walk away.
If he tries to give you a parting shot tell him... "You have nothing, your dismissed!" :p

If things go well I might be able to give your technique a shot this year. Thanks.

If baiting bears is ethical and really the way to go, why aren't we allowed to bait deer? If the baiting of one is legal they both should be. I have a problem with people who want to bait bears but don't care if you can't bait deer. Exact same arguments for and against in my mind...

I've stopped explaining myself or justifing anything I do to anyone in situations like this. My response delivered in a calm voice goes something like this, "It's a legal activity, endorsed by the current government and governments before it. If you don't like it don't do it. If you want it changed take it up with the government but I have neither the inclination or the obligation to explain myself to the likes of you."

Repeat this as needed. If this doesn't work say in a calm voice, "Clearly you are so profoundly stupid that you haven't picked up on the fact that I truly do not give a #### what you think and even if I did explain it you're obviously too dense to understand."

If that fails. Kick him in the nuts. ;)

thats my favorites whit non hunter, when they say hunthing his cruel. then i ask who about fishing ? most say its not the same. Then i say : OK let me get this straight if i was to baith deer with a big fish hock and a winch sitting at the botom of the lake with my diving suit and when the deer bite i would drag him to the botom of the lake for him to drown THAT would be more acceptable then shoting him in the head

Sam Steele said:
Huh. I know you can't in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Of course you can bait bears there. Learn something new. Thanks.

SS

What do you mean by this? You can bait in lots of areas in Alberta. Better have a good look at your hunting regulations :D

Not sure about Saskatchewan, I dont live or hunt there.
